Update t3 pregnancy trigger warning loss

Hi All,

I write a post on here a few weeks back. I was asking about pregnancy and t3. Unfortunately I had an ectopic pregnancy and had to have surgery. I had emergency surgery years ago so this caused some scar tissue on my tube.

I just wanted to let you know, I ended up seeing a fertility doctor after what had happened. I asked her about t3 only for pregnancy. She looked at my blood results. She said that there must be some function in my thyroid because my t4 went up on its own whilst I was pregnant. She said she expects it would have got higher if the pregnancy had progressed. I told her that my endocrinologist wanted me to start taking t4 before I try again. The fertility doctor said that she would suggest I continue with the t3 and the dose can be titrated as needed once I'm pregnant again. She said all my other bloods are good and if I feel better on t3 that I should stick with it.

I was a bit shocked by the fertility doctors response. She seemed very relaxed about using T3 only and I've mostly had doctors who have had a go at me for taking t3 and told me I should be on t4. My endocrinologist is still on at me to change to t4. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet, but I feel confident with my fertilty doctor more than my endocrinologist. My endocrinologist told me she is going to change ne back to t4 and I should stop the t3 straight away and start 50mcg of T4. This is what is making me lose confidence in her knowledge.

You’re saying your endocrinologist wants you to just stop 50mcg T3 and go to just 50mcg levothyroxine ?

Suggest you find a different endocrinologist asap

Any dose changes should be slow and cautious

You might try adding in 25mcg levothyroxine alongside T3

Retest in 6-8 weeks

Essential to check you have OPTIMAL vitamin levels BEFORE TTC again

When were vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 last tested

What vitamin supplements do you take

Have you had BOTH TPO and TG antibodies tested for autoimmune thyroid disease

Yep that's what she said. The last time I tried to change back to t4 she told me to drop it significantly. But this time just told me to stop cold turkey.

My fertility doctor checked all my vitamins and they are all in range except for vitamin d which I ended up having an injection to treat. I was taking some pregnancy vitamins but I stopped because it had biotin in and it was messing my blood results up. I'm just taking folic acid now.

My GP said the antibodies were negative. But I haven't seen the results myself. I don't remember having these bloods done 🤣

vitamins and they are all in range except for vitamin d

Within range not necessarily optimal

Suggest you get FULL thyroid testing done yourself via Medichecks or BH

Recommended that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am, only drink water between waking and test and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Day before test ALWAYS split T3 as 3 doses spread through the day with last dose 8-12 hours before test

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

Only do private testing early Monday or Tuesday morning.

Medichecks and BH also offer private blood draw at clinic near you, or private nurse to your own home…..for an extra fee

Then trial adding 25mcg levothyroxine alongside T3

Retest again in 6-8 weeks

I am sorry for your loss. I have a feeling your fertility doctor may have a problem with her thyroid, has read up on it and gone her own way with treating herself. It is a shame the Endo has so little knowledge that it would make you ill. Hug.

Thanm youYou might be right. The fertility doctor seemed to know exactly what t3 is without asking me, even though it was written as liothyronine. Most doctors ask me what that is and even if I say t3 they still need me to explain.

I think I'm going to stick with the fertility doctors advice. She seems to know what she's doing and I feel confident in her ability.
