High TPO antibodies confirms autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto’s

Did you know that cause of your hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease?

Was test done early morning and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

Free T4 (fT4) 19 pmol/L (12 - 22) 70.0%

Free T3 (fT3) 4.9 pmol/L (3.1 - 6.8) 48.6%

currently shows poor conversion of Ft4 to Ft3

Most people when adequately treated will have Ft3 at least 60-70% through range minimum

Low vitamin levels results in poor conversion and poor conversion results in low vitamin levels

Please add actual vitamin results and ranges

Frequently necessary to supplement vitamin D and vitamin B complex virtually continuously to maintain OPTIMAL vitamin levels

No I did not know that was the cause. I've never been told that I have hashimotos.

Yes i took the test in the morning.

The last few months I've had the same brand. Its not always the case tho.

Other than taking vitamin D and iron, is there anything else I should be doing?

low vitamin D

aiming for vitamin D at least over 80nmol minimum

Low vitamin D

GP should prescribe 1600iu everyday for 6 months

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

ouh.nhs.uk/osteoporosis/use...

GP will often only prescribe to bring vitamin D levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol or even 80nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But with Hashimoto’s, improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly when supplementing

Once year with thyroid via Medichecks or BH

Once via NHS test service

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function.

There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7.

One spray = 1000iu

Suggest you start on 2000iu - 3000iu per day

Retest in 3 months

only add one supplement at a time

Then wait at least 2 weeks to assess before adding another

Starting with vitamin D

Folate is also low

supplementing a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid)

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance

Difference between folate and folic acid

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Thorne Basic B recommended vitamin B complex that contains folate, but they are large capsules. (You can tip powder out if can’t swallow capsule)

Thorne currently cheapest on EBay

IMPORTANT......If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

In week before blood test, when you stop vitamin B complex, you might want to consider taking a separate methyl folate supplement

Retest thyroid and vitamin levels in 2-3 months after working on improving low vitamin levels

Should see much better Ft3 levels and general reduction in symptoms

See how that is

Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten. Dairy is second most common.

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are diagnosed coeliac, but further 80% find gluten free diet helps, sometimes significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

While still eating high gluten diet ask GP for coeliac blood test first or buy test online for under £20, just to rule it out first

Assuming test is negative you can immediately go on strictly gluten free diet

(If test is positive you will need to remain on high gluten diet until endoscopy, maximum 6 weeks wait officially)

Trying gluten free diet for 3-6 months. If no noticeable improvement then reintroduce gluten and see if symptoms get worse

Non Coeliac Gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and autoimmune disease

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/296...

The predominance of Hashimoto thyroiditis represents an interesting finding, since it has been indirectly confirmed by an Italian study, showing that autoimmune thyroid disease is a risk factor for the evolution towards NCGS in a group of patients with minimal duodenal inflammation. On these bases, an autoimmune stigma in NCGS is strongly supported

nuclmed.gr/wp/wp-content/up...

In summary, whereas it is not yet clear whether a gluten free diet can prevent autoimmune diseases, it is worth mentioning that HT patients with or without CD benefit from a diet low in gluten as far as the progression and the potential disease complications are concerned

restartmed.com/hashimotos-g...

Despite the fact that 5-10% of patients have Celiac disease, in my experience and in the experience of many other physicians, at least 80% + of patients with Hashimoto's who go gluten-free notice a reduction in their symptoms almost immediately.

Thank you so much for your help. I have read all the information and it has been very helpful. The doctors unfortunately do not give you all the information. Which is why I decided that I would take control of my own health. Without the support of this site that wouldn't be possible. So I am very grateful.I'm now on vitamin D. I'm going to start the iron supplements next week. I've added magnesium rich foods and I'm going to work on reducing gluten in my diet.

I'll test again in February and post results again. 😊

what was ferritin result?

If ferritin is low has GP done full iron panel test for anaemia

What were iron panel test results

39ug/l

SlowDragon profile image
SlowDragonAdministrator in reply to Donlbz

This is ferritin result?

if yes…..39ug/l is low

But NHS only tests and treats vitamin deficiencies

Are you male or female

Approx age

Pre or post menopause?

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

We have received further information the lab about ferritin reference ranges. They confirm that they are sex dependent up to the age of 60, then beyond the age of 60 the reference range is the same for both sexes:

Males 16-60: 30-400 ug/L

Female's: 16-60: 30-150

Both >60: 30-650

The lower limit of 30 ug/L is in accordance with the updated NICE guidance and the upper limits are in accordance with guidance from the Association of Clinical Biochemists. ‘

cks.nice.org.uk/topics/anae...

In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency

Also See page 7 on here

rcn.org.uk/-/media/royal-co...

Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet

Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption

Do you think I need to order a test for my iron?
