Folks, Just wanted to provide an update from my previous posts on my thyroid issues. After being told my TSH was fine for 7 months x 2 Gp’s and then after a three month wait on my own Endo and then getting a pat on back and sent off to surgeon after a 5 minute chat. I gave up and paid privately to see an Endo who advised me all did not look ok with my thyroid and bloods and hes increased my Levothyroxine to 100mcg. My TPO antibodies was also 99! My thyroid has become very enlarged and he said definate surgery as its pushing my windpipe to left ( shown on CT) he also explained my ultrasound and there is a nodule is suspicious..he’s going to monitor me after surgery and said if we need to introduce T3 etc he will and make adjustments

Its the first time i felt listened too and not ignored but glad I got support, I’m very frightened of the surgery as they told me the bigger the thyroid the more challenging the surgery and he said that also the potential cancer is causing the increase in swelling. But , i’d just like to thank the members and steer i got it was very much appreciated and the advice. Now for surgery …

Thyroid levels should be retested 6-8 weeks after any changes in dose or brand of levothyroxine

Have you had vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 levels tested yet

all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

High thyroid antibodies confirms autoimmune thyroid disease also called Hashimoto’s

Your antibodies are high this is Hashimoto's, (also known by medics here in UK more commonly as autoimmune thyroid disease).

Hashimoto's affects the gut and leads to low stomach acid and then low vitamin levels

Low vitamin levels affect Thyroid hormone working

Poor gut function can lead leaky gut (literally holes in gut wall) this can cause food intolerances. Most common by far is gluten. Dairy is second most common.

According to Izabella Wentz the Thyroid Pharmacist approx 5% with Hashimoto's are coeliac, but over 80% find gluten free diet helps, sometimes significantly. Either due to direct gluten intolerance (no test available) or due to leaky gut and gluten causing molecular mimicry (see Amy Myers link)

Changing to a strictly gluten free diet may help reduce symptoms, help gut heal and slowly lower TPO antibodies

While still eating high gluten diet ask GP for coeliac blood test first or buy test online for under £20, just to rule it out first

Assuming test is negative you can immediately go on strictly gluten free diet

(If test is positive you will need to remain on high gluten diet until endoscopy, maximum 6 weeks wait officially)

Trying gluten free diet for 3-6 months. If no noticeable improvement then reintroduce gluten and see if symptoms get worse

Non Coeliac Gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and autoimmune disease

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/296...

The predominance of Hashimoto thyroiditis represents an interesting finding, since it has been indirectly confirmed by an Italian study, showing that autoimmune thyroid disease is a risk factor for the evolution towards NCGS in a group of patients with minimal duodenal inflammation. On these bases, an autoimmune stigma in NCGS is strongly supported

nuclmed.gr/wp/wp-content/up...

In summary, whereas it is not yet clear whether a gluten free diet can prevent autoimmune diseases, it is worth mentioning that HT patients with or without CD benefit from a diet low in gluten as far as the progression and the potential disease complications are concerned

restartmed.com/hashimotos-g...

Despite the fact that 5-10% of patients have Celiac disease, in my experience and in the experience of many other physicians, at least 80% + of patients with Hashimoto's who go gluten-free notice a reduction in their symptoms almost immediately.

Hi Void1234. You've been through a lot, I saw your other posts. I'm glad the private endo is sorting things out. You did the right thing there and hopefully now you're on the road to getting some resolution to your problems and will feel better when it's all sorted. Keep us updated, and good luck with the surgery. I'm sure it will be OK. Take care.
