Update : Had my doctors appointment to be told... - Thyroid UK
Update
Your GP was supposed to receive hospital letter after 1 month. Can you check with hospital directly and ask for your copy? It’s so wrong that you were diagnosed 4 weeks ago and still haven’t started the treatment.
Hope you can get the treatment you need very soon.
I don’t have a doctor for my thyroid my doctor said she would write to the doctor and ask his advice and would let me know what the best treatment would be for me and test she said she hasn’t heard from them yet feeling worried like it’s not important but my arthritis doctor said it was urgent as I was very over active and needed to see my doctor asp don’t know what to do .
Contact the hospital who did your blood test and tell them you are worried as your GP has had no information of how best to treat you and you do not feel well at all.
I notice in previous post that you were due to have the test for Graves antibodies TRab on the 19th of December, is this test still going ahead ?Do you have a hospital appointment for this, i thought an Endocrinologist had to authorise this test ?
The results from this are probably what they are waiting for, before deciding whether to start antithyroid drugs, and actually this is good, because if it's not Graves causing your high fT4 then carbimazole might be the wrong treatment.
Test is still going ahead Saturday and no I haven’t a endocrinologist my arthritis doctor spotted it and write to my doctor and she write to the endocrinologist for advice on treatment and she hasn’t heard anything yet 4weeks now .
Hey Jenny.
If you feel you should start anti thyroid medication sooner rather than later you can ask your GP to contact endocrinology department directly seeking advice about commencing an antithyroid eg carbimazole. GP are permitted to Initiate Carbimazole with the guidance of a specialist, they can agree what dose you should start on. Your levels were quite high and you sound like you are not managing very well with symptoms.
My GP did this without any prompting from me. I think it’s wrong that you are being left like this. Make sure you tell them how you are struggling and make this suggestion.
I’m shocked that Jenny is being left like that. I saw my GO on a Wednesday, had blood tests done on the the Thursday and on the Friday I got a phone message from my doctor to say that I had a very overactive thyroid with antibodies and that she had left a prescription for carbimazole at reception for me, had made me an appointment with an endo and told me to come back in four weeks time for more blood tests. When that was done we discovered it hadn’t made much difference so I got a letter from my endo telling me to get more carb from my GP and double the dose.
I have read on here in the past that doctors in Scotland did not prescribe carbimazole, that it was left to an endocrinologist to do that so I wonder if Jenny is in Scotland. I would definitely contact my GP again and say you feel so ill you can’t keep going like that.
Hey there again :
I don't think the doctor can prescribe before there is the medical evidence.
Quite why the antibodies couldn't have been run from the initial blood sample is a mystery to me, as this was how I was diagnosed back in 2003.
So you have a another blood draw on the 19th for the antibodies so it's not long to wait now.
Take the beta blockers, and stay as comfortable as you need to be during this difficult period.
I was tested positive for graves antibodies then I had to wait 3 months for endo appointment which was ridiculous to prescribe carb, I don't know why GP couldn't do it even if it was a lower dose.
Hi that is bad ..my GP did that for me he give me a lower dose of carb .and I had my first appointment with endo 4 weeks later and I still taking the lower dose ..it seems to help ..have you started you medication yet ? And what dose ? Wish you well soon. Bella
Hi yeah I have been taking carb since march 40mg initially but it gave me hives so went to 20mg and now I'm on 10mg have been since june. My results are finally in normal range except for antibodies. So I'll stay on this dose for a while. I was pretty poorly back in dec last year before carb my heart rate was 150's resting. I take propanalol to help 220mg. Graves can be tough!
Yes it is horrible I take 5 mg of carb every day ..I was missed diagnosed and doctors was giving me antidepressants and propranolol for anxiety but never did help.. now I do suffer from anxiety 😟 although my TSH and t3 t4 is normal. Is horrible rollercoaster..propranolol doesn’t help me at all I wish it did ..glad you feeling better
Yeah I had the opposite problem my heart raced so much and I had tremors that it gave me anxiety. Propanalol fortunately does help me. It is a rollercoaster, my hair is just growing back after loosing loads of it, I'm worried that's it just going to fall out again. Xx
