low tsh levels

Yet again my levels are up the wall.

In July spoke to the doctor and was told that I had been taken my medication wrong. Been on thyroxine for over 20 years and now been told.

I also came on here for advice and chatting made me at ease!!

Well anyway they reduced from 175 to 150 and I started to take them at night last thing before bed. 30 to 60 mins after my cup of tea. Got to admit might of missed one or too here and there. And still no difference in my levels. !

They now have reduced again to 125mg (never been this low mgs) I had my thyroidectomy back in 1994.

My tsh levels r up and down like a yo yo highest being 83 in August 2020.

Will vitamins and iron tonic help boost, was on them before but sorted family members health first I guess I forget about looking after me! !

I'm 51 this month and feeling very low.

thank you for reading

Just testing TSH is completely inadequate, especially after dose reduction

Get yourself a weekly pill dispenser so you NEVER miss a dose

which brand of levothyroxine are you currently taking

Do you always get same brand levothyroxine at each prescription

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

When were vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 last tested

Last dose levothyroxine should be 24 hours before blood test

If you normally take levothyroxine at bedtime/in night ...adjust timings as follows prior to blood test

If testing Monday morning, delay Saturday evening dose levothyroxine until Sunday morning. Delay Sunday evening dose levothyroxine until after blood test on Monday morning. Take Monday evening dose levothyroxine as per normal

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after each dose change or brand change in levothyroxine

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

If you can get GP to test vitamins and antibodies then cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3

thank u for all that information.

Can answer some of the questions.

already have a pill dispenser

Not sure on brand as just ran out but as far as I know its the same brand each time I get from Wells pharmacy (online) been with them since covid started.

the blood test was taken at 9.45am on Monday. I had eaten breakfast and cup of tea. I think I took my thyroxine about 9.30pm on Sunday evening.

Not been on vitamins for a while as thought they will make it worse. Just started again on multi vitamins for 50+ today .

It was yesterday I looked at the private testing websites. And my plan was to take vitamins on the morning, thyroxine at night time for a month and then do private test. And then go from there.

last week I had my hair all cut short as was getting so fed up with hair falling out. Brought dearer shampoo too.

Also I had to chase up the blood test our gp is useless !!!

multivitamins never recommended on here

Most contain iodine not recommended for anyone on levothyroxine

Never supplement iron unless had full iron panel test for anaemia and found to be low

Suggest you don’t take any vitamin supplements and get vitamin levels tested now via GP if possible

suggest you get full thyroid and vitamin testing done now before reducing dose levothyroxine further

If ferritin is below 40-50 get full iron panel test

I think I will email the doctors and get them to give me call back. I might even ask them for a referral to see someone at the hospital.

Assuming you are in the U.K.

Contact GP and request full thyroid and vitamin testing done BEFORE you will consider reducing levothyroxine any further

Highly unlikely to get T3 tested ….but ask anyway

Referral to NHS endocrinologist is approx a year at the moment and often refused anyway unless Ft4 and TSH are way out

First step is ALWAYS to get full thyroid and vitamin testing done…..usually privately

Work on improving low vitamin levels and fine tuning Levothyroxine dose if necessary

Come back with new post once you get results

Members can advise on what vitamin supplements necessary

if you have been missing doses of levothyroxine you really need to make sure you take it everyday minimum 6-8 weeks and then retest BEFORE considering booking any consultation with thyroid specialist endocrinologist

Email Thyroid U.K. for list of recommended thyroid specialist endocrinologist and doctors

yes I do live in UK. Have been under Royal Marsden in Sutton for radio iodine back in 1996 . Since then moved to Sussex and was under the local hospital. They got levels right and the gp took over. And since then it's been up and down. One gp got it right then he moved practice!!

essential to test vitamin levels annually

Dose levothyroxine should be not be adjusted by just testing TSH. Most important results are always Ft3 followed by Ft4

After thyroidectomy common to need addition of T3 prescribed alongside levothyroxine……if Ft3 remains low once Ft4 and all four vitamins at optimal levels

examples of private test results
