Not Diagnosed

I have been having issues lately and the symptoms seem like hypothyroidism. I visited the doctor in March and was told I would have bloods done to verify however, the test wasn't done (even though I gave bloods). Back again for more bloods and found out May my TSH was 2.77 and Serum T4 was 16.7 and all was ok.

The issues is lack of muscle strength (difficult to walk more than a mile) even though I go to the gym 3-4 times a week, I have to stop frequently doing any aerobic exercise. My hair is excessively falling out, I have course patches of skin on my arms and legs and experiencing brain fog and now depression.

My doctor tested for anemia since I was exhausted and found out my white blood cell count was low. I am told to schedule another set of bloods in a few weeks. My doctor is not focusing on anything but exhaustion not other symptoms.

Any suggestions please?

The thyroid produces thyroxine (T4) and a tiny quantity of Triiodothyronine (T3)

Most T3 is converted from FT4 it’s the more active powerful hormone and rules most symptoms.

NHS only test free T3 (FT3) if TSH / FT4 abnormal.

As TSH in range & FT4 is about mid range? Ranges vary so add If if you have. It’s not been tested but you might want to arrange a full private test to check it as you have symptoms.

Might be a good idea to test thyroid antibodies this will show the likelihood of becoming hypothyroid later on.  That way you can begin treatment as you approach the criteria for treatment.

List of companies offering different options, some discount codes available.

You order test online the kits arrives via post & finger prick sample (extra fee for private venous draw). Post back and results available quite quickly.  There’s lots of options, some packages include thyroid function, key nutrients and thyroid Antibodies.  Others basic function only.

Is that something you think you could manage?

Do you remember the time test was taken? It’s can have a bearing on the results.

Hi Dgordon4,

Do you get your vitamin D levels checked? With you mentioning muscle weakness I had very weak arm muscles when I had a vitamin D deficiency. I couldn't lift my arms above my head and my muscles were also very sore. It also caused daily headaches and I felt drained and tired.

If you have any results for vitamin D blood tests post them on the forum and others can comment on them for you.

Best wishes.

For a complete picture you need vitamin results as well - ferritin, folate, B12 and D3. You can ask your GP for these tests or alternatively use an online lab like Medichecks and buy yourself a test - well worth it! Low vitmin levels can cause many annoying symptoms and fatigue.

Hair falling out for me was down to low ferritin. Completely resolved once my iron levels were better.

It could still be earlyish stages of low thyroid but you really need a FT3 result and antibodies against thyroid to have any real idea.

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested.

Very important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 at least once year minimum

About 90% of primary hypothyroidism is autoimmune thyroid disease, usually diagnosed by high thyroid antibodies

Autoimmune thyroid disease with goitre is Hashimoto’s

Autoimmune thyroid disease without goitre is Ord’s thyroiditis.

Both are autoimmune and generally called Hashimoto’s.

Low vitamin levels are extremely common when hypothyroid, especially with autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto’s or Ord’s thyroiditis)

20% of autoimmune thyroid patients never have high thyroid antibodies and ultrasound scan of thyroid can get diagnosis

In U.K. medics hardly ever refer to autoimmune thyroid disease as Hashimoto’s (or Ord’s thyroiditis)

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests early morning, ideally just before 9am

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or all relevant vitamins

thyroxine is a cheap med. maybe suggest a trial of small dose to see if symptoms improve? As cited in many of these posts TSH is not the gold standard it’s cracked up to be.

If you go for a private test, try one that includes potassium. Low potassium makes every muscle feel like jelly and hurt! Just a thought. I hope you get to the bottom of it and feel better soon.
