Is anyone struggling with conventional thyroid medicine

I tried Thyroxine for one year, however, I got nowhere as I latterly realised my body can't convert T3 to T3. Also and more worryingly! I had a year of heart strain and a tight chest.

I am now on T3, with scope to increase my dose, confirmed by my endo, however, again I have a slight heart strain. Few weeks ago my heart rate leaped from 74bpm to 220bpm, I was breathless with a very tight chest. Not pleasant. Previous to this I was on metavive. I am thinking of reverting back to the natural pills but this time, get regular tests until I find the correct dose.

Endo won't increase my scope now until I see a cardiologist. I am thinking of just reverting to metavive. Does anyone else suffer from a strain on their heart and a tight chest. Never experienced prior to taking thyroid meds. Saw a cardiologist in Jan. My heart is fine and low risk. However, I need to see him again as endo has requested this.

Did you ever try mainly levothyroxine plus small doses of T3 - typically 3 x 5mcg T3 alongside (slightly reduced) levothyroxine dose

Are all four vitamins tested and optimal levels

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

How much T3 are you currently taking

Do you split the dose

Have you had Dio2 gene test

No didn't try mixing. Endo just took me off levothyroxine. I do have an advanced thyroid test kit to send of to medicheck, to check my other supplement levels. Just at a loss why my heart is fine according to cardiologist but yet I constantly have heart strain on these meds. Running out of T3 and reluctant to order more (expensive) and just revert to metavive. Do you rate metavive?!

i take it you were measuring your resting heart rate.

Might it be that in your desperation to feel better you have instigated too many changes too quickly.... that simply does not work! It confuses your body!

it may also be that you are wrongly medicated....as in hormone or dose...or both

Metavive, unlike NDT. is a glandular with no known hormone content.

I'd suggest that you have a full thyroid test after at least 6 weeks on a steady dose of replacement hormone(s).. Any sooner will not give an accurate picture of what is going on.

The results will point to the way forward.....anything else is guesswork!

Hi, thank you for replying. I've been on 40mcg for almost 3 months without increasing. I was ill and unable to gauge my energy levels accurately so just rode the virus out first. Only now, do I feel I can increase the dose but endo reluctant to do so due to my heart issues, despite their being scope to increase my meds. She agrees it would be good to increase them.

Just strange I have this heart strain whilst on thyroxine and now T3. Previously I saw a cardiologist, my heart was fine. I have ordered a advanced thyroid test from medichecks to gauge my other levels, vitamin 12 etc

Low iron and/or ferritin (iron stores) can cause tachycardia. It would be well worth getting an iron panel done. Once you have results create a new thread, post your results and ask for feedback:

There are discount codes and other info on private testing on this link:

Another common cause of fast heart rate is high or low blood sugar.

And another cause is thyroid hormones (both T4 and T3) at the wrong level for you.

And the last one I know of is high cortisol. The best way to test that is by getting a 4 - part saliva cortisol test (although doctors disagree on that).

The best (and easiest) test available of saliva cortisol is this one :

Thank you SO much!!! This is very interesting. My thyroid levels seem ok. Well, TSH and T4 and under range but T3 is average on the gauge, therefore endo happy enough.

I will send my advanced thyroid test off as it will gauge my iron levels, vitamins, inflammation and autoimmunity. I've not had a cortisol test for a few years. Thank you for the links. Not sure about my sugar levels but I am craving chocolate like there is no tomorrow just now! put on 2 kilos in a month as a result.

I hope you have got to the bottom of your heart and thyroid issue!

A few years ago I could only tolerate T3. Both T4 and NDT made me feel terrible. At the time my iron was below range and my ferritin was very low in range. I absorb iron very slowly and it took ages to improve my levels and then maintain them once I got my ferritin up to mid-range. But after years of self-treatment to optimise everything I could afford to test and treat I am now taking both Levo and T3 and tolerating them both, and I no longer appear to need iron supplements. :)
