I haven’t been on for a while and hope everyone is doing ok 🦋
I’m seeing my GP next week to discuss low dose body identical HRT and I’m just preparing for the appointment .
I’m 42 next week and so confused as I also have Hashimoto's and I’m taking Armour for that but my goodness I think peri-menopause is creeping in now thick and fast and I get terrible depression after my period has ended . I’m on no contraceptive at the moment and I’m progesterone intolerant .
I was thinking of trying some cyclical Estrogen gel and some Utrogestan but I understand Utrogestan contains soy .
Anyone else in a similar situation and how has it gone for you . Any positive results . Has the HRT helped your thyroid?
Your welcome to PM me if you prefer .
Thank you , Kelly 🙏

Hi Kisca, I’m feeling so much better re peri menopause since starting HRT (oestrogen gel daily and progesterone tablets for 2 weeks per month). I’ve actually needed less Levothyroxine, not more. To be honest I didn’t look at the soy in utrogestan but (in my case) it hasn’t caused any issues.
I’d suggest having a look at Dr Louise Newson’s free Balance App, as I find it really useful for comparing HRT medications & having up to date research articles. There is also an ability to post questions.
There is information on thyroid conditions and HRT on the Newson website. Taking HRT is a personal choice, so I would read as much information as you can.
Some people find they need slightly more Levo when taking HRT, whereas I’ve actually found I need slightly less. If you decide to start HRT, your GP should test your thyroid levels after 6-8 weeks to see if they need adjusting. Alternatively, you can test your thyroid levels yourself privately.
Hi PixieElv 👋 I was really worried about going back on HRT and it upsetting my thyroid meds. Really wish I hadn’t been now and that I’d not stopped in the first place! Turns out a lot of my lingering thyroid ‘symptoms’ were actually menopause related. I’m now a month into my ‘old’ HRT and have energy to burn, sleep like a log, a brain which is firing on many more cylinders than before and I’ve dropped a clothes size. My pain levels have reduced and I’m finally starting to rebuild muscle in my legs. Also low mood has completely disappeared. I’m planning to test my thyroid in about 3 weeks but for me it’s been a bit of a revelation. My advice now is don’t worry about your thyroid for now. Your menopause symptoms should be addressed and then see where you get to? Hope this helps x
Hi Kisca I can’t comment on HRT for peri really because I’m post menopause where everything sort of finally settles. I think a lot of people now get blood tests to see where their hormones are at. Maybe good to get this done? I remember my peri to be all over the place. I’m progesterone intolerant too by the way but need to take it because I still have a uterus. I had to kiss a fair few froggy HRT preps before I found one I could tolerate. Also had to have a few rounds with several GPs and finally demand to see a consultant (SO familiar with thyroid journey!). HRT is currently working really well for me but like I say I’m post meno so maybe easier to ‘treat’? Good luck with the GP!!
Hi Kisca, I’m just starting my peri journey and started Hrt ( evorel 25 patch 2 weeks ago and 200mg utrogestan orally 2 days ago for 12 days a cycle) . I have hashimotos and on Levo. I’m no expert but researched the soy content and read that the maximum amount of soy that hashimotos people should have a day is much greater than the amount in utrogestan daily so i don’t think we need to worry about the soy content personally . i also read we should check our thyroid bloods 6-8 weeks after starting hrt and if it needs adjusting then do it then . i’m expecting to have to adjust my levo , more so because i used to take it at night but had to switch it to morning so i could take my utrogestan at night . Most people need a slight increase in thyroid medicine to settle it and then check as normal after that but some need less and some don’t need to change their meds at all. I’m aiming to give my hrt 3 month trial and then see where i am . I have quite bad anxiety and an over worrier and over thinker but this time i’ve decided to just go for it and cross my fingers . I’ll never know if hrt will be good for me unless i give it go basically . Anyway , so far so good , haven’t had many side effects yet but it’s early days . good luck and hope things go well for you whatever you choose . x
