Does omeprazole reduce thyroid drug absorption?

I’ve been put on omeprazole and have been experiencing real crashes where I get so sleepy mid morning and mid afternoon. I take it 4 hours away from my thyroid meds. Anyone else experience this?

Probably. And would reduce absorption of nutrients, too - like iron, which would make you tired. You probably had low stomach acid, anyway, even before you started taking it.

I’ve only been on them 5 days but before that I was on a course of antibiotics for sinusitis and I’m not sure they help absorption. And how do you convince doctors that low stomach acid when you’re hypo is a real thing? 🙄

Ask them to test it. This article is about testing stomach acid levels:

Same thing happened to me after sinusitis (although it’s now chronic and I’m on different medication) I was given doxycycline and it gave me gastritis so then had to have omeprazole, took me 6 months to get off it! I hate it!

It is well-known to affect absorption of vitamin B12.

Thank you. I’ve stopped it and told my doctor why.

I had same problem with that medication. I now take Pepsid and it seems ok.

Check your vitamin levels after antibiotics

Vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Consider a probiotic and/or fermented foods like kefir, sauerkraut etc

When hypothyroid we frequently have low vitamin levels

Omeprazole will lower vitamin levels even further

Thanks. I took a probiotic specifically for antibiotics, as apparently the strains survive. I also take a good B complex, bone complex, Selenium, etc. I also love sauerkraut!
