Does Omeprazol affect Levo

Hi all, I've been on Omeprazol for gallbladder problems which caused pancreatitis. My gallbladder has been removed but I've still to check with doctor if I need to continue taking it. Since I've been on it my skin especially arms, legs and body, has been very dry. Flying like snow when taking off clothes!!Since it reduces acid in the stomach I wondered if this was affecting my levo absorbtion.

Yes definitely

If you must take omeprazole, it should be at least four hours away from levothyroxine

Extremely important to regularly retest vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Omeprazole will lower vitamin levels

How much Levothyroxine are you currently taking

When were levels last tested?

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, especially if you have autoimmune thyroid disease (Hashimoto's) diagnosed by raised Thyroid antibodies

Ask GP to test vitamin levels

You may need to get full Thyroid testing privately as NHS refuses to test TG antibodies if TPO antibodies are negative

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip, best not mentioned to GP or phlebotomist)

If/when also on T3, make sure to take last third or half of daily dose 8-12 hours prior to test, even if this means adjusting time or splitting of dose day before test

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

Yes, it will, and your B12 levels (which is one of the things needed for conversion of levo to t3)

I got my gallbladder removed last week so it's no longer an issue. I just wondered about the effects of Omeprazol if I'm still advised to use it
