Is this normal

Batty1 profile image

I split my T4 and T3 into 2 doses and have been doing this for about 3 years now and have been doing fine no issues.

For the past 2 weeks my pulse races in between my thyroid doses and then chills out a couple hours after I take my dose… I know this can’t be normal but what could be causing this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Why did your doctor raise your dose when you'd been well on your previous level?

The fact your heart starts to race after a dose, then settles later, sounds like the clue!!

It takes 6/8 weeks for a new dose to settle into the system....

You are now 8 weeks on 125mcg levo ( up from 100mcg) and 10mcg T3

Now that the new dose has settled is it causing you to be overmedicated.....with transient racing pulse.

Seems a bit of a coincidence.

Pulse apart, how do you feel?

Just a thought.

No, my heart races between doses and settles a couple hours after taking my meds

I get this sometimes too...taking my T3 seems to settle it out again. I also wonder if it's to do with T3 dropping too low in between doses. I too am currently on T3 twice a day so I wonder if twice a day is too far apart.

Could you be undermedicated?

Im wondering this myself or maybe its too long between my doses although I don’t understand why it would be doing this now unless my psoriatic arthritis meds are catching up to me.

Its been longer then 8 weeks I got the increase middle of may.

Why did they increase your levo ?

Batty1 profile image
Batty1 in reply toDunkenb

Because I was suffering with exhaustion and my labs allowed me to have and increase in meds.

Do you mind saying what you levels were ?

Back in January I was taking 100mcg of T4 and 10mcg of T3 and tested the items below.

FT4- 1.31 (0.82-1.77)

FT3- 2.9 (2.0-4.4) (paid out of pocket for test and Doctor won’t look at this result)

T3- 104 (71-180)

TSH-0.526 (0.450-4.5)

8 weeks ago I was given a 25mcg per day increase in Levo …. 125mcg and 10mcg T3.

FT4- 1.44

FT3-2.7

T3- 123

TSH- 0.236

I think they should have lowered your levo and increased the liothyronine. It seems that you’re not converting much t4 to t3 and taking levo just to keep tsh in range ( which is all GPs seem to focus on)

I tried to get him to increase my T3 and it just wasn’t happening truthfully if I wasn’t already on T3 prior to seeing him as my Endo he probably wouldn’t even prescribe it …. He is pretty narrow minded when it comes to certain medications (T3 and AT) I asked to be placed on Armour Thyroid a while back and his response was “you know that comes from pigs” if it weren’t for the fact that he is top of his class for thyroid cancer and I wasn’t constantly dancing with recurrence I would have move on from him but I haven’t liked any of my Endo’s they all lack compassion and can’t think outside the medical box even for a second in regards to treatment.

his response was “you know that comes from pigs”

This comment crops up with doctors regularly in respect of NDT. Just remember to point out that bacon comes from pigs too, and people have been eating it for centuries without problems. And in the medical field surgeons use heart valves from pigs in heart surgery. Also, diabetics have used insulin from pigs (and cows) ever since it was discovered.

Indeed, and there are more meds derived from animals -

That sucks, as I was going to say get a second opinion.

I had 7 Endo’s in 5 years and need to stick around with this guy until I can move forward.

Good luck, maybe you can try change their mind. Suggest to them you try a new approach as you’re feeling worse not better.

Hi !! I’m just popping on as interested to know why you split the T4 dose ? Considering it but ppl keep telling me there is no point !? Why did you do this if you don’t mind me asking ? Thanks hope ur well and found balance now ! 😊

I split my dose because my energy declines in the afternoon and splitting my dose helped this and because taking the 10mcg T3 at once would cause me to have palpitations.

Ahh I was more interested in the fact your splitting your T4 ?? Not the T3! The only thing going wrong for me atm is evenings and feels like I should do exactly same as mornings which is t4/t3 together split dose! I split my T3 thru day but feels like my T4 drains out too fast if that’s even a thing ! Basically I’m really well and optimal all day just terrible in evening so looking for something else I could adapt.
