Weight gain on T3 only? This ain't supposed to happen!!

Hi Everyone - its the Intrepid Turkish Tiromel Kid here!!

Having gone to great lengths to obtain Tiromel from Turkey I have found that I am gradually putting weight ON! I didn't get it to lose weight - staightforwardly to treat my thyroid condition. I know some very unwise bodybuilders use it to lose weight but my intention was to take it for the purpose it was designed for.

I take one tablet (25mg T3) at night on an empty stomach and the same in the morning - a bit strange at first, but now after about a month I am feeling much better and the energy levels are slowly returning. I originally took NatureThroid which I found was fantastic - sadly we can't get them at the moment nor can most of us probably afford them. Then I took Thyroid -S, but I can't afford them anymore either and they are hit and miss to get hold of. I shall persist with the Tiromel but I am also going to try Bitiron (also from Turkey by the same manufacturer) which is T4 with a smaller dose of T3 (when they arrive).

I am not bothered about losing weight, but just refuse to put it on!!

Anybody got any thoughts or ideas?

Love to All

Sheena

Hey Sheenah

I recall your weight loss journey and in your moccasins, I wouldn't want to put that hard-lost weight back on either. When did you last have a blood test? Maybe you've overrun your sweet spot? I have read ( can't remember where but probably on here...) that if you have gone over your sweet spot, you may get symptoms similar to under dosing. 🙄

Just a thought and can be done at reasonable expense via monitormyhealth.org.uk/ Do let us know if you find a resolution to your problem.

That test lab looks more reasonable but do they send results to the GP, I don’t want that! 😄

No they don’t. Remember to use the Thyroid UK discount code. They’re good.

Just to mention that one 25mcg tablet of Tiromel is approx equal to 100mcg of levothyroxine in its effect.

Have you had any recent labs done if so add them.

Hello Everyone - thanks for your responses. No - I haven't had any bloods done for a long time. I have supplemented with Vit D3 and K2 for years, and have recently added B12. I take Turmeric, Milk Thistle and NAC just before going to bed, along with 25mg Timorel and now that my body seems to be adjusting, I normally sleep very well.

Because of the wisdom and support I have recieved from this fantastic website for several years, I feel confident enough to plot my own course. The help and advice I have had from GP's has been next to useless. Left to them, I would be 20 stones and sleeping 18 hours per day!!!

I am 70 my next birthday, and the thought of piling loads of weight back on is frankly unbearable. If I can maintain my current weight of 13st 5lbs I shall be quite happy - before I found NDT I was 15st 8lbs. I shed it steadily over around 2 years. Looking back, I have had thyroid problems all my life - a fat child for no reason. It turned out that practically my whole family had it. My younger sister was skinny until she was about 18 and now in her early sixties she is over 20 stone. (Yes - she does know about this site.)

Thank you all for your advice and support

sheennah,

Weight gain indicates thyroid meds aren't working effectively.

T3 meds won't work if you are having too little due to a slowed metabolism, or too much due to body safety mechanisms that will turn it to an inactive form or desensitise receptors so it can't work. If you previously did well on NDT you may benefit by reducing T3 a little and adding some T4.
