This blog shows Tania discussing what thyroid tests are really for and how should they be used in diagnosis

What’s wrong with calling TSH, FT3 and FT4 “thyroid function tests”?

Why don't we hear more about cellular as well as glandular hypothyroidism/ thyroid function?

Perhaps because it complicates things for medics with 10 mins to diagnose etc

And because there are no tests for cellular T3 so requires the skills of clinical evaluation rather than a reliance on tick box diagnosing.

Recognising cellular hypo was key to my recovery

I fear my inner rebel is on the rampage today!!

A useful document that highlights the need for careful analysis of TFTs putting the emphasis on the relationship between the three hormones as opposed to blindly looking at whether they are within their reference intervals. It's good also to see some attention being paid to the bioactivity of TSH.

I would add that the low TSH, fT3, fT4 syndrome as described in NTIS can occur in people who have no apparent illness. The axis can be broken when there is no obvious cause.

The terminology is confusing, I'm not sure what we can do about it. For example, "Thyroid Stutus" is usually accepted to mean the status of thyroid hormone action, whether the person is clinically hypo or hyper thyroid and not the stutus of the thyroid gland itself.
