Liothyronine

I have recently been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and have been taking levothyroxine for 3 months. My endocrinologist has prescribed t3 but it’s very expensive! Where is a safe place to buy in the Uk?

Is this a private endo or NHS?

If it's a private prescription then as long as it is written as follows:

Thybon Henning

20mcg

100 tablets (or multiples of 100)

then it can be obtained for around £50-60 from certain chemists.

Try

Roseway Labs

Chemist4U

Smartway Pharma

Hi roseway labs quoted me £180 for 180 tablets! It’s a private prescription.

Does your prescription say which brand? that may be their price for another brand, but I've bought Thybon Henning from them recently for about the same price as SeasideSusie says.

TH comes in packs of 100, so best to have the prescription for multiples of 100 otherwise they would have to split the packs which might be more expensive.

Don't forget to ask the delivery price as some places include delivery and others don't.

I checked several pharmacies on the Thyroid UK list. I was surprised that one of them wouldn't accept credit cards - they ask for your bank details and set up a direct debit. I decided not to buy from them - I don't hand out my bank details willy nilly.

As I said, it needs to specify Thybon Henning brand to get the price I mentioned from those pharmacies. Maybe ask the endo to reissue the prescription as I have described above.

Correct.

The default in the UK is that pharmacists should always dispense a medicine with a UK approval, if possible. They are not allowed to switch to an unlicensed make under normal circumstances. If there is a shortage (and a serious shortage protocol has been declared) or a doctor writes the prescription for a product that is not licensed, they can then dispense unlicensed products.

Nora1960, 'have been taking levothyroxine for 3 months. My endocrinologist has prescribed t3 '

How much levothyroxine are you currently taking? And how much T3 have you been prescribed?

Three months on levo following diagnosis is rarely long enough to determine a need for T3. I'm surprised that you've been prescribed it already. In fact I'm surprised you've even seen an endocrinologist at this stage.

Would be interesting to see your blood results, and hear more about why you've been prescribed T3 so soon.

It was private.
