No replies since I posted my February, 22 blood test results

I think I posted my blood work results in the Correct forum.

Slow dragon and few other people usually respond quite promptly.

This time I didn’t get any replies.

Though the results were within range, my left eye twitches quite a bit and palpitations haven’t gone away, though less since I stopped the 5 mcg T3.

My endocrinologist already mentioned that since results were within range, palpitations were not due to T3.

I am wondering if my 50 mcg of Levo T4 should be increased. Thanks

You have previously mentioned low iron - how low is it and is it being treated ? Low iron can be involved in palps due to the heart sensing reduced oxygen. Iron within the red blood cells is the transporter of oxygen around the body - simplistically put.

Your dose of Levo sounds low as it is normally a starter dose.

Low magnesium can cause all sorts of twitching.

T4 free range - 0.82-1.77. Me 1.23

Tsh range - 0.45- 4.50. Me 2.27

T3 range- 71-180. Me 82

Taking 50 mcg of T 4 levothyroxine.

How long have you been on just levothyroxine

Bloods should be retested 6-8 weeks after any dose change

Always test early morning, ideally before 9am and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Is this how you did your test

FT4: 1.23 pmol/l (Range 0.82 - 1.77)

Only 43.16% through range

Assuming this result is

Total T3

82 pmol/l (Range 71 - 180)

Only 10.09% through range

Total T3 not the correct test

You need Ft3 tested

Most people when adequately treated will have Ft3 at least 50% through range and if on levothyroxine only usually need Ft4 at least 60-70% through range

The results in your other post were

T4 free range - 0.82-1.77. Me 1.23

Tsh range - 0.45- 4.50. Me 2.27

T3 range- 71-180. Me 82

These show you are under-medicated: TSH should be lower than this - always less than 2 and probably less than 1 and 50 mcg is only a starter dose. Is the T3 result total T3 or free T3? The width of the range suggests total, which isn't much use really - better to get the free T3 result which shows the amount of hormone available for your body to use. Either way it's much too low. Most of us need both "frees" to be a good 2/3 through range x

Likely low vitamin levels with such low dose levothyroxine and constant chopping and changing

When were vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12 last tested

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Have you had coeliac blood test done

Are you on strictly gluten free diet

Suzi_ profile image
Suzi_ in reply toSlowDragon

Test done on December 26,21

Folate 11.2 ( 3.5-5.4) range

B12 711 (211-911)

Ferritin 3.5( 4.6-204)

A1c 5.3( 4.6-5.9)

Never had a Coeliac test.

Stopped T 3 5 mcg on January 18,22

Finally palpitations r better

Thanks for all replies.

Is Ferritin really only 3.5?

Optimal ferritin is at least over half way through range

You need full iron panel test for anaemia

Likely iron supplements for many months

Low Iron and ferritin frequently the cause of palpitations

Low Iron/ferritin directly linked to being under medicated for thyroid

To tolerate levothyroxine and especially to tolerate T3 we need GOOD Vitamin Levels

No vitamin D test result?

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Get coeliac blood test done before trialing strictly gluten free diet

Yes - I mentioned iron in the first reply above ! No response which was disappointing as it seems to be a problem ... oh well we can but try 🌻

In all people, a serum ferritin level of less than 30 micrograms/L confirms the diagnosis of iron deficiency

Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet

Eating iron rich foods like liver or liver pate once a week plus other red meat, pumpkin seeds and dark chocolate, plus daily orange juice or other vitamin C rich drink can help improve iron absorption

This is interesting because I have noticed that many patients with Hashimoto’s disease and hypothyroidism, start to feel worse when their ferritin drops below 80 and usually there is hair loss when it drops below 50.

Never supplement iron without doing full iron panel test for anaemia first and retest 3-4 times a year if self supplementing. It’s possible to have low ferritin but high iron
