I was wondering.....

Having resorted to a private Dr, I am just starting the journey to work out why my thyroid is struggling. My GP practice seem to only be interested in TSH and the test result number, not patient symptoms nor whether other systems are causing problems.

I won't be able to afford the costs of a private Dr long term though.

I was wondering how others on this forum are managing their health? And how that works for you??

Hi Kit Monster, your thyroid test results are certainly a puzzle. In the early days of not getting the correct treatment from NHS I paid for a private Thyroid scan (£120 then) It showed that my thyroid had shrunk considerably, nothing of concern though. Is the person you are booked to see privately recommended by Thyroid UK? Have you checked with members if they have seen that person and found the consultation helpful?

Do hope you get some answers. I always had low T3 and never felt right until I managed to get some liothyronine added to my levo.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, time just seems to have fun away from me!

Yes, the private Dr. I am seeing is on the ThyroidUK list. I haven't posted any requests for others personal experiences. Yet!

I do think long term I will need to self test and medicate, but I need to learn a lot more about thyroid health before then.

Kit_Monster,

Sorry to hear your GP is another TSH obsessed, as this can make obtaining enough thyroid meds difficult. I hope your private doctor is more open minded and able to help you.

Many of us have used or are using private care/meds, but when it doesn’t continue and care is passed back to the GP we find ourselves back at being under-medicated. This is when many of us have then turned to self-medicating.

I didn't realise how shockingly little our GPs seem to know about the thyroid and it's interplay with all the other hormone systems...

Personally, I need to do a lot of reading and more research to be better informed. It's been a while since I've studied, but I'm excited to learn more.

Hi kit monsterI totally relate to your GP experience: ‘My GP practice seem to only be interested in TSH and the test result number, not patient symptoms nor whether other systems are causing problems.’

I’m about to get more detailed tests privately and then possibly pay to see a private doctor. GP’s just over-rely on the TSH and explain away symptoms.

Hi Wednesdaystar22 and thanks for your reply. I was just wondering how you're fairing with the private tests and Dr.?

Hi kit monster I hope you saw my update posted a while back? Doc has prescribed T3. Happy with doctors advice. Shame I have to pay £££ and GPs just don’t do the correct test. Very disappointed with GP. But only just started with T3 so really looking forward to my symptoms improving. Thanks for asking! Happy Easter 🐣
