Still suffering with memory loss

Welly73 profile image
12 Replies

I’m due to have my bloods taken on Thursday, should more than just TSH levels be taken?

I posted last year about my memory and it still hasn’t improved. Since then I’ve changed GPs and also started HRT. Most of my physical symptoms have gone since starting HRT but my memory is really bothering me.

I had low ferritin (9) which was treated with iron tablets. I’m wondering if I may have low vitamin levels.

I had a brain MRI and that was clear.

Previous post from year ago showing TERRIBLE ferritin and low folate and B12 levels

healthunlocked.com/thyroidu...

Ferritin 9

B12 361 (197-771)

Folate 2.9ng (2.4 - 26.8)

Free T4 15.4pmol (12-26)

TSH 1.71 (0.27-4.2)

Free triiodothyronine 3.6pmol (3.1-6.8)

Vit D 78.8 nmol

Thyroid antibody 33iu (<34)

Ferritin severely deficient

Folate low

B12 low

Vitamin D ok

Thyroid results showed you were under medicated and in need of dose increase in levothyroxine

You had 25mcg dose increase in levothyroxine after this

Were levels retested or is this first test since increased to 100mcg per day

What brand levothyroxine are you currently taking

EXACTLY what vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Are you still taking iron supplements

ESSENTIAL to retest Vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Thyroid - you need TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 retested

Test as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

Have you had coeliac blood test done

Are you on strictly gluten free diet

Firstly thank you so much for reply.

I think I was on 50mcg at the time and my gp increased to 100mcg.

I was taking iron tablets for quite a few months and then had repeat bloods and told to stop taking it. A month later it dropped and started again with n the iron tablets once back at the correct levels was told to stop . I’ve changed gps and thought this long standing memory issue was down to the peri menopause so haven’t pushed for other bloods doing.

Not taking any vitamins. I started to take b12 & b complex only a few weeks ago but stopped them last week due to my blood test on Thursday.

Not being tested for coeliac and not on a gluten free diet.

If not already on strictly gluten free diet

Request coeliac blood test is done too

I had memory loss while on T4 only and it didn’t improve until I started taking T3 as wellAs T4. When you have your bloods taken please ask for T3 to be tested. I wasn’t converting T4 to T3, and that showed in my blood test results

Do I say T4 or FT3 I’m so confussed 🥺

Sorry, I should have said you need to ask for free T4 and free T3 (FT4 and FT3)

I found this when I was going through my previous blood test results. Is this the test for coeliac?

Yes so you have had Coeliac test and negative result

However it’s ALWAYS worth trying strictly gluten free diet

Only 5% of autoimmune thyroid patients are coeliac, but a further 80% find strictly gluten free diet helps, or is essential

Gluten can be cause of brain fog…..can take at least 6-12 months on gluten free diet before noticing improving brain function and memory

If no obvious improvement, reintroduce gluten see if symptoms get worse.

Non Coeliac Gluten sensitivity (NCGS) and autoimmune disease

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/296...

The predominance of Hashimoto thyroiditis represents an interesting finding, since it has been indirectly confirmed by an Italian study, showing that autoimmune thyroid disease is a risk factor for the evolution towards NCGS in a group of patients with minimal duodenal inflammation. On these bases, an autoimmune stigma in NCGS is strongly supported

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/300...

The obtained results suggest that the gluten-free diet may bring clinical benefits to women with autoimmune thyroid disease

nuclmed.gr/wp/wp-content/up...

In summary, whereas it is not yet clear whether a gluten free diet can prevent autoimmune diseases, it is worth mentioning that HT patients with or without CD benefit from a diet low in gluten as far as the progression and the potential disease complications are concerned

restartmed.com/hashimotos-g...

Despite the fact that 5-10% of patients have Celiac disease, in my experience and in the experience of many other physicians, at least 80% + of patients with Hashimoto's who go gluten-free notice a reduction in their symptoms almost immediately.

Low vitamin levels can be linked to poor gut function and gluten intolerance

Low iron/ferritin often linked to gluten intolerance

glutenintoleranceschool.com...

Suspect you are poor converter of Ft4 to Ft3 as well if gluten intolerant

Always test as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

If GP doesn’t test TSH, Ft4 and Ft3 you can test privately via Monitor My Health for £26.10

So I’ve had my bloods taken today. I called the gp yesterday to check which tests had been requested. I had a feeling I’d get to my appointment and then not get tall the tests Can you believe my ferritin wasnt even listed, in fact there were so many missing.

On a good note, my doctor agreed on TSH FT3 FT4 thyroid antibodies , coeliac, ferritin, full blood count, vit D, folate and more.

I’ll keep you updated when I have the results.

Thanks for everything.

So my results are back… I’ve not had a call from my gp yet as they usually take a few days to look over them. I’ve got full access to my records so I’ve probably seen the results before him.

I was convinced my memory was down to low b12 but I’m guessing that’s ok?
