Vitamin D

I have been taking vitamin D for 5 years asince I have been taking steroids. I was diagnosed with Graves disease last year and my GP has told me that Vit D is contraindictated in hyperthyroidism. I am waiting to hear from Endo. Is my GP correct?

Cinka,

No, Vit D has been found to be beneficial in many autoimmune diseases, including modulating Graves and discouraging re-occurance after remission.

Maybe your doctor is worried that high thyroid hormones and supplementing Vit D could dis-regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body, but thyroid hormones shouldn’t be high if well managed and if Vit D were high you wouldn’t be needing to supplement anyway.

If your doctor is worried ask him to test your Vit D levels as many people are low.
