B 12 and vitamin d: Advise please is it best/ok... - Thyroid UK
B 12 and vitamin d
I take vitamins in morning.
Do you have vitamin D and B12 deficiencies? It’s best to test to know what level of supplements you need.
Any supplement needs to be well away from levo dose as otherwise it can interfere with uptake.
Are you aware of vitamin D important co factors? Magnesium and K2? Do you also take them.
There are four key nutrients recommended here to be kept at a good level once you take thyroid meds - ferritin, folate, vit D and B12. Practically everyone in the UK needs to supplement vit D during the winter months; in the summer whether you do and how much to take will depend on eg how much exposure to the sun you get, where you are (sun generally stronger in the south) skin colour etc .... but for all four the important thing is to test and then take what you need ...
If you post your latest blood results the lovely people here can see how you are doing and advise if you need to supplement (and how much) x
Yes you can if it is needed. However thyroid meds should be taken separately on an empty tummy & nothing eaten for an hour including vitamins or minerals -hence the recommendation of thyroid meds first thing in morning.
Always test before starting supplements and retest annually
Test Vitamin D twice year
No other medication or supplements at same as Levothyroxine, leave at least 2 hour gap.
Some like iron, calcium, magnesium, HRT, omeprazole or vitamin D should be four hours away
(Time gap doesn't apply to Vitamin D mouth spray)
Before supplementing with B12, I'd ask GP to check your B12 levels (and also vit D)to exclude that you don't have pernicious anaemia (I have) and if you did have P.A. you'd need regular B12 injections as your body cannot convert to B12 which could cause other problems.
Afraid I don't properly understand what you have said in your reply. Could you possibly explain a bit more?
Not everyone can tolerate that much vitamin D - or anywhere near it.
Absolutely right -well said Fatbuddy.....unless its in a capsule with oil.
What does BBN mean?
Vitamin D range is 50 - 100 nmol/L. optimal is often quoted on here as around 80 why are are you saying 50 - 70?
K2 mk7 directs calcium to bones and teeth where need and away from tissues blood vessels where you don’t. Vitamin D won’t rise if Magnesium deficiency. this article explain why they should be taken together.
Nonetheless, there are those who cannot tolerate, say, 1000 IU a week. (Yes, I do mean "week", not "day".)
Which is one reason blanket recommendations to take 3000 a day (or pretty much any other likely dose) are a problem. We need to consider that what you, or I, might find absolutely fine, could cause others to feel very ill.
They're like little clear gel capsules as opposed to tablets.
