Low iron first time in years despite supps

Hello,

I just had an iron panel done as it turned out my iron is 4% of range.... 55 (50-170)! Ferritin better at 30% range, but still not great.

I used to take Floradix and my iron was over midrange on it, then took 60 mg Actiferol (ferric pyrophosphate) in powder from the pharmacy for couple of months and a month ago I started ferrous sulphate 105 mg called Ferrograd.

I can't believe how much it has dropped. Could you please post your recommendations as I'm unsure what to take to bring it up. Not sure I absorb these pills, maybe I should go back to Floradix?

Just to add my B12 is excellent at 820 (range up to 880) - supplementing 1000 a day folate is mid-range, heamoglobin over midrange.

Thanks!

That's a strange range for serum iron. Are you in the UK? The labs that have done my iron panel have used the ranges (5.8-34.5) and (6.6-26).

Considering the dramatic reduction in your level I don't think it's appropriate for any of us here, who are not medically qualified, to be suggesting what you can take. Iron is complicated. My suggestion would be to discuss this with your GP and maybe some investigations can be carried out as to why this has happened and why you are not holding on to it, such as any unexplained bleeding.

I'm not in the UK, I have done these tests in Poland. All I can think of is that I moved from taking liquid iron to pill form in the last 3 months, also my thyroid meds have been changed and I wonder if this causes some issues (posted ok this separately). It is strange that my ferritin is still the same as it was, my RBC is good and so is heamoglobin. The nurse took about 10 vials of blood and I wonder if this tanked my iron..thank you

Thank you so much, I have just watched it and it gives me food for thought! He mentions liquid iron supplements that work better for some than pills and this is what changed 3 months ago.

Thank you gabkad for posting an amazing and very informative video with Dr Cohen. Dr Cohen shared so many valuable information that I never knew and made so much sense. I think that Iron is a very over looked mineral that is very helpful for us. I know someone that was very low with Iron and is now dealing with Corona. Thank you for a great post.
