Hi all, I’ve been gifted some CBD gel capsules from Holland and Barrett.

Does anyone know any reason not to take them with Hashimotos?

Thank you.

I think a few people on the forum have mentioned trying CBD. I can't remember anyone having major problems on it, although I think a few have said it made no difference.

My only comment on CBD is that I hated the taste and the smell - the stuff I had wasn't in capsules. I was also too mean and too poor to take a full dose and as a result it had no effect on me at all. I bought a bottle a few years ago (when it was still only newly available) and paid something like £24 for the equivalent of about 4 or 5 doses. I simply wasn't interested in paying that so I never bought it again.

I'm assuming the price must have come down since then, unless everyone is a lot richer than me!

As Humanbean has already stated it can work for some but not everyone - everything seems to come back to trial and error where thyroid problems are concerned!

I did take it for some time, and found it great! It helped a lot with my back pain and ataxia. I no-longer take it because I cannot find a reliable provider that's cheap enough - because, as HB says, it can be very expensive (and I'm not sure I would trust H&B for that, because I don't trust them for anything else!).

However, you might be interested in this post from 10 days ago, with the latest thinking on CBD oil - although not sure I trust that, either! It's a case of you pays yer money and you takes yer choice - i.e. find out what works for you and what doesn't. :)

I have started using Blessed CBD OIL, found that it’s helping my mood and energy levels , it seems expensive but you see how long a bottle lasts , then you realise it not that bad .This firm is one of the best in the uk

Ok

Well, how long the bottle lasts depends on how much you take. I was taking 9 drops a day.

Thank you greygoose, very interesting. I have read up a little (though find you guys more informative!) and it seems CBD oil competes with Levothyroxine and so not beneficial. 💁🏼‍♀️

No, it doesn't actually seem that way. It just says that they suspect it might, but have no proof. And, as so many people on here are saying they've taken it with no untoward effects - including me - I don't know why you hesitate to try. Just don't take it at the exact same time as your levo, leave a large gap between the two. I found CBD oil extrememly beneficial.

It won't do you any harm, BUT - H&B are notorious for selling under-strength supplements, and I've heard quite a few who tried their CBD and not go no improvement, who then tried a trusted supplier and then did.

I use it, and find that it is helpful. I buy a 750mg bottle for around £22 (inclusive of P&P) about 2-3 times a year, so not too expensive at just over a pound a week.

As regards the taste, I very soon got used to a few drops on a square of dark chocolate, or an Extra Strong Mint.

Perhaps you can tell us where you get that, it sounds like a good deal. :)

I buy mine from Simply CBD and am about to try their patches. Good prices and a sale on. Was shocked at the prices in H&B.

Ah yes! They are very good, and I would recommend them. But, unfortunately, they will no-longer ship to France. So, that's why I'm stuck!

I use Simply CBD too now and have been fine with that brand. There are so many different brands available it is difficult to pick one as they vary in price and quality.

I'm tempted to try the patches, but I wish they were available in smaller quantities, or a trial pack. 30 patches is a lot if they aren't effective. If you try them, would you mind posting or PM'ing me with how you get on?

When I tried one of the H&B own brand CBD products a few years back it made me feel rather dizzy and a bit sick so I stopped it. When I tried it again the same thing happened so I don't think it suited me at all.

You have to take it slowly when you take CBD products and build up gradually.

I read CBD competes with thyroid hormones for metabolism in the liver . I tried it but ended up with a higher tsh . It was doing me good but I stopped . I'm going to try it again if nothing else you get good sleep . I'll take thyroid meds in morning and CBD before bed . Here's hoping .

Is getting a higher TSH such a bad thing? Perhaps it just meant that you needed an increase in dose. The TSH itself is pretty irrelevant, it's the FT3 that is important. But if that's not tested, you can have no idea what's going on.

As always, Greygoose, excellent observation. Unfortunately CBD does not bring my TSH up. That would be so great, though! Happy New Year!

Well, I did think that that could have it's advantages! :)

Happy New Year.

I tried CBD paid for high quality provacan which comes from Israel. It made my heart race apparently it lowers cortisol so I never tried it again.

None whatsoever! It may or may not be effective. It also depends on the brand.

Mlinde profile image

I've tried several brands and found one that's effective for me, PM me if you want the brand name but I go for the organic versions, look for one with at least 10% active flavenoids. Not cheap though, unless you want rubbish.

There's no reason why you shouldn't post the brand name on here, so that we can all benefit. :)

I take prescription CBD. It helps me with pain and anxiety and most of the time I sleep like a baby when I take it. As far as I know CBD is anti inflammatory which would be a good reason to take it for people with thyroiditis. I feel anything that keeps inflammation down is a good thing.

I don't know anything about the particular brand you were gifted and it took me a bit of experimenting before I found a brand right for me and the best dose. Generally I found that the better stuff is the more expensive stuff. Having taken a course (and participated in research as a subject) I think that good quality CBD is safe and can be very helpful.

If you have a good doctor I would mention it. My doctor acted like I was on heroin even though I said "PRESCIPTION" (as in another doctor prescribed it !). I see everything I put in or on my body as "medicine". From that point of view I usually collect as much information as I can get. CBD, from what I found so far, is safe and can be very helpful. More research is needed, though. :D

Yeah, my GP flat out refused to prescribe it (and I thought she was cool, how wrong can you be!). Great for anxiety if you can find the right one.

I've been taking cbd oil for about 4 yrs and it's wonderful. My dog even takes it for her arthritis. It's about getting the right dosage. I don't take capsules nor do I buy the Holland&Barrett brand as I find them much more expensive. I prefer the gummies and have used the tincture. I use the tincture for my dog.

I got CBD oil gummies (25mg) from Kara’s orchards - cheaper to buy 5 bottles - 1st 4 were fine and got great nights sleep with them ( take armour NDT in the morning ) but 5th bottle seal was broken and all gummies were stuck solid together in the neck of the bottle - after lots of emails and complaints on their Facebook page - finally got a replacement bottle from another company who did the handling of the product but no longer handled Kara’s orchards - wouldn’t use them again !

I have just seen your post and a thought comes to mind:

Is there a risk of CBD showing up should one have a police drug test, for example when driving, or is the dose too small?

I am really ignorant about CBD.

tattybogle profile image
tattybogle in reply to Baxterpup

they are only testing for THC (the psychoactive bit of cannabis) not CBD .. or at least i hope they are . I think the roadside kit also tests for methamphetamine and MDMA .

I think they have to do a proper lab test before they can prosecute you anyway, so there isn't any need to worry about CBD oil as long as it was sold legally .. it shouldn't have any THC in it anymore , or they wouldn't be allowed to sell it , it's the THC that makes it illegal, not the CBD.
