Hi all, anyone else get an email this morning asking us to fill in a survey about the supposed Misdiagnosis of thyroid issues and mental health? I am fuming! Really worrying that they would do such a thing.

Yes. I'm assuming that it would have been sent out to many on their mailing lists.

The first page of the survey states.....'The findings from this survey will be used to raise awareness of how thyroid symptoms cross over with mental health conditions and how thyroid conditions can be misdiagnosed as depression or anxiety.'

I would initially have considered it to be mostly a marketing exercise but they have connected it to this years Thyroid Awareness Week taking place 16th-22nd October 2021.

This is to help raise awareness and also Medichecks will be donating £2 from every thyroid test sold during the week to ThyroidUK.

Why are you fuming ? What's the harm in it ? The survey was posted on Facebook last week along with emails going out.

Maybe I’m misunderstanding… I thought it was trying to say we don’t all have thyroid illness and we could just have mental health issues…

They’re saying the reverse….that mental health issues are often caused by thyroid disease

Thanks.. I see it now. It was early in the morning and I misunderstood it. Sorry!

This is the problem that I'm having; my gp can't see past my mental health problems and puts any further issues down to them which is very frustrating.

Well it was intended to help raise awareness of Thyroid Awareness Week so I think it's worked! ☺

Misdiagnosis of thyroid issues could equate to patients having clear clinical symptoms but the doctor may not be knowledgeable about clinical symptoms at all. So they may prescribe 'other' medications such as antidepressants etc but haven't checked the patient's thyroid hormones.

I diagnosed myself one hour after the GP phoned and was happy to tell me that my blood tests were fine and there was nothing wrong.

Unfortunately, he didn't understand what a TSH of 100 actually meant.
