Lump in throat is it thyroid?

Hi I upped my NDT to 2.5 grains early July. Initially seemed fine but for almost 4 weeks now I have felt like a lump is stuck in back of my throat . Could this be thyroid related? I also have Barretts Osophagus & not sure if it is acid related. Out of my mind with it all and never feeling well. Has anybody else felt like this after Increasing their thyroid meds? Going to call GP on Monday but will be lucky to get an appointment never mind a quick solution.

TrishG67,

Out of the thyroid hormone replacement meds NDT is commonly seen as the most intolerant when basic fundamentals are not being met.

It may be the NDT increase has exceeded the amount of T3 that a low iron level can tolerate, or exposed inadequate cortisol levels that are suppressing/elevating required balanced glucose needed for NDT cellular activity. Do you have hypoglycemia (or too little sugar in the blood) or/and insulin resistance (or too much sugar in the blood, ie do you feel hungry after eating?)

Do you have Hashi/Ords? Your exact NDT sweet-spot dose will have suppressed & discouraged thyroid activity & so possible Hashi attacks but this can undo if your sweet spot has been compromised, either under or overstepped. Think of thyroid antibodies putting the immune system into a high state of response that may attack the elevated glandular proteins as in the molecular mimicry scenario of gluten or even Hashi itself. Even for people who have had Hashi/Ords for years resulting in a shrivelled thyroid gland, it only takes one tiny living thyroid cell for an attack to be initiated.

Did you test thyroid hormone levels before upping your dose? It may be that you need to reduce NDT back to the levels before the throat issues, retest and maybe add some Levo to NDT if levels are too low whilst you address the fundamentals required in order to make NDT work.

I am unfamiliar with Barretts Oesophagus which having googled it sounds very unpleasant but will suggest in a wholly novice manner the importance of stomach acid and how hypothyroidism can decrease it.

Low thyroid hormone discourages the connection between stomach acid (HCl) & its signaling to close the sphincter between the oesophagus & stomach (LES) resulting in acid reflux. Then low cortisol (also resulting from low thyroid hormone) decreases the secretion of digestive enzymes & juices impairing digestion, encouraging inflammation and making acid reflux worse. This condition is wholly misunderstood by the medical profession who assume acid reflux to be the result of excessive stomach acid and prescribe PPI's, etc. Of course this may not be applicable to Barretts Oesophagus and so inappropriate consideration.

I have never had ant throat issues related to my thyroid as far as I know. However I was diagnosed as a child some sixty years ago so memories are vague.I do however know that BO has caused me to have throat issues. I had several months of misery before diagnosis and again recently had some spells of heartburn and swallowing problems. I am confident it’s BO.

Where I live all BO patients should be monitored by the hospital. I spoke to my GP about this as they failed to contact the hospital this was introduced. Now writing to the practice to ask why as the GP refuses to answer this question. He also tells me that 10 years after diagnosis it’s unlikely there is any change and decided against requesting the endoscopy he initially said he’d do.

Just in case you are in a similar situation get onto them as soon as possible to get it looked at. Take care
