Confused by Vit D loading dose method

Hi!

So I am deficient in vitamin D.

My most recent result was 27 (30-200) back in November and based on my practice notes they do class me as deficient.

I was given the link to calculate loading doses by some of you lovely contributors.

In the pic is my results.

The thing is.. I’m not sure how to do it…?

I would like to reach the dose in a few weeks max ideally (so I can start feeling better! 😅).

Should I ask the doc for injections (do they exist??) or do you think should I just have a few of my 4,000iu tablets?

Also, am I correct that once I reached the loading dose, I am meant to take 10,000 ju a day?

Also.. how do I know I did in fact reach the loading dose? 🤔 do I just count?

Thank you.

Loading dose is total of 300,000iu over 6-8 weeks

GP should prescribe

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

ouh.nhs.uk/osteoporosis/use...

6 weeks of 7000iu per day = approx 300,000iu

Or 8 weeks of 5000iu per day = approx 300,000iu

Retest vitamin D at end of 6 or 8 weeks see how much level has improved

You will need ongoing maintenance dose vitamin D

Trial and error what dose each person

Where has that come from, what is in your picture?

That is nothing like the NICE Clinical Knowledge Summary for treatment of Vit D Deficiency which is:

cks.nice.org.uk/vitamin-d-d...

(click on Management > Scenario:Management)

"Treat for vitamin D deficiency if serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels are less than 25 nmol/L.

For the treatment of vitamin D deficiency, the recommended treatment is based on fixed loading doses of vitamin D (up to a total of about 300,000 international units [IU]) given either as weekly or daily split doses, followed by lifelong maintenance treatment of about 800 IU a day. Higher doses of up to 2000 IU a day, occasionally up to 4000 IU a day, may be used for certain groups of people, for example those with malabsorption disorders.

* Several treatment regimens are available, including 50,000 IU once a week for 6 weeks (300,000 IU in total), 20,000 IU twice a week for 7 weeks (280,000 IU in total), or 4000 IU daily for 10 weeks (280,000 IU in total)."

I have not heard of anyone having Vit D injections and I doubt it's available for your level.

I wouldn't suggest anyone takes 25,000iu D3 daily unless under supervision of a doctor.

I wouldn't suggest anyone takes 10,000iu D3 daily for a period of 3 months. I think I took that amount for 2 weeks then went down to 5,000iu. I raised my severely deficient level of 15nmol/L to 202nmol/L in 2.5 months by using Doctor's Best D3 softgels.

Also, am I correct that once I reached the loading dose, I am meant to take 10,000 ju a day?

Nobody should need 10,000iu daily as a maintenance dose. Many people find 2,000iu is enough for a maintenance dose, a few of us need a higher dose.

Also.. how do I know I did in fact reach the loading dose? 🤔 do I just count?

Yes, it's as simple as that.

Although now I’m even more confused 😂.

The values in the pic come from this site which is posted here often…

I was at 7.6 ng/L - 19 pmol/L.

(Always get retested at three months when loading. Need to be aware of medical issues of too much vitamin d )

I was given this regimen -

First month - 10 000 iu/day

Next two months - 5000 iu/day

Got up to 78 pmol/L in those three months. Went down to 2000 iu/day for maintenance.

When I was deficient my dr treated me with 800x4 a day for 3 months, it was Fultium. I started at a reading of 12 and was tested monthly and my final reading was 58. I do find I still need to take it otherwise I find it’s painful just to get up from a chair. I currently take 5000 in the summer and up to 8000 in winter, I know when to increase as I develop a pain along my foot at night that keeps waking me. It has been hit and miss regarding brands and types of vit d3 but have settled with the solgar softgels, some of the other brands just don’t seem to work for me, as if I haven’t had anything.

Re injections, the only time I ever heard of that was Maddona during concerts in the late 80’s.

I have now received the Vit D test came back and the level is now

71 (30-200)

From previously 27 (30-200).

I have been taking vit D3 4,000iu for a few weeks prior to this.

Not sure how long exactly though.. possibly 2-3.

Based on previous results the loading dose should be 300,000

So should I continue taking the 4,000iu for say another month and retest to see if I reach 120-140 (30-200).?
