Hi don't know where this post is going 3rd time of writing apologies if it's appearing somewhere. I have just been prescribed a 2month loading dose of vit d to take once a week with a blood test after 4 weeks to check for toxicity. I gave 2 concerns .. 1 I am hypersensitive to nearly all mess and do not like the sound of toxicity.. 2 don't fancy going to hospital for blood test during vivid.. Advice welcome thanks

If your vit d is so low that even a doctor notices it, four weeks on a weekly supplement is hardly going to take it so high that it will be toxic! Your doctor is exaggerating - or trying to scare you (they like to do that!). It probably won't make much difference at all.

Toxicity just means that the vit D has gone over-range, but it won't be over-range long enough to affect you - if ever! So, I shouldn't worry about it. The test will probably just tell you you need a higher dose!

How low was vitamin D?

NHS Guidelines on dose vitamin D required

ouh.nhs.uk/osteoporosis/use...

With loading dose...that’s 300,000%iu over 6-8 weeks and vitamin D should be retested at end of course

GP will often only prescribe to bring levels to 50nmol.

Some areas will prescribe to bring levels to 75nmol

leedsformulary.nhs.uk/docs/...

GP should advise on self supplementing if over 50nmol, but under 75nmol (but they rarely do)

mm.wirral.nhs.uk/document_u...

But improving to around 80nmol or 100nmol by self supplementing may be better

ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/218...

vitamindsociety.org/pdf/Vit...

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7

It’s trial and error what dose we need, with hashimoto’s we frequently need higher dose than average

Government recommends everyone supplement October to April

Also read up on importance of magnesium and vitamin K2 Mk7 supplements when taking vitamins

Vitamin K2 mk7

Important to test folate and B12...often low when vitamin D is low

Low vitamin D and low B vitamins may be linked as explained here

drgominak.com/sleep/vitamin...

In YouTube video when Dr Gominak talks about vitamin D levels ...vitamin D at 40ng/ml (USA units) is equal to 100nmol (UK units)

Ferritin needs testing too

Wow thanks for all that info. Don't know my exact reading other than it said less than 30 which in their ranges was deficient... Next range was 30 to 40 insufficient and over 40 OK thanks

don't fancy going to hospital for blood test during vivid..

You can do a fingerprick blood spot test at home, done by an NHS lab at City Hospital in Birmingham. You will, of course, have to pay as it is a private test:
