Last night when I was in bed, I rolled over and suddenly felt an ache down the outside of my left calf. It felt the way you do when you have overworked a muscle. I was going to get up to get some magnesium spray downstairs, but when I began to walk I felt incredible pain--the kind you feel when a muscle goes into spasm. I managed to hobble to the bathroom, massaged my leg, and finally it subsided. The walk back to bed was only a tiny bit painful.
We had been 10-pin bowling that night and I was feeling exhausted, since we didn't get home until 9 p.m. I am fairly sure I didn't pull a muscle while bowling.
Any idea what causes something like this? I just took an extra 750 mg of magnesium glycinate and hoping this never comes back.

Could it have been cramp? I regularly have to spend 15-20 minutes hobbling round the bedroom to rid myself of spells of intense leg pain. It’s invariably a bit troublesome the following day but not too grim after the initial spell.
In my case it got steadily worse over the years, initially I could ease it with massage. I keep magnesium to hand and apply every night before bed. This for me has been reasonably effective along with keeping legs and feet warm. Socks and long leg pjs rule here.
Hello vocalEK. Sympathy for you. This pain amongst many is so excruciating you don't know what to do. For starters there is a Homeopathic Magnesium Phosphorica 30c. You take it away from food and drinks 15 minutes prior and 15 minutes after taking. It comes in a vile. You take 5 pallets under the tongue it dissolves pretty quickly. If you find that in 15 minutes it hadn't helped totally you can repeat it again. It usually works quit quickly and doesn't take up much room. You can carry it in your purse keep it nearby your bed.
I found that I get these awful muscle cramps when my thyroid meds are not Optimal for me. How are your vitamin "D" levels and Zinc. These are also very helpful too.
I second jgelliss suggestion. I get these cramps in bed sometimes and keep this remedy in my bedside cupboard, works a treat. Here in the UK it's New Era Mineral Cell Salt Mag Phos 8 "Fast Melt" tablets. My late hubby used to get a lot of leg cramps and he used this remedy as well.
Products we’ve found effective. ReMag lotion,(Botanicahealth), Better You Magnesium Spray, Massage brush. Epsom salt baths. Magnesium sticks (Amazon) usually keep in bedside table and handbag these give a measured dose of Mg citrate which dissolves on tongue also used by sportsmen and women.Work on building up your Magnesium and Potassium electrolyte reserve levels with dark green leafy vegetables as Calcium needs to be balanced. It’s prudent to monitor heart rate as well as checking Vitamins B6, B9, B12 Vit D3 and Vit K2.
It might also be worthwhile checking for H Pylori and low stomach acidity caused by low Zinc. The latter creates a cascade where minerals and nutrients are not absorbed properly.
