Strange test results - B12 and Magnesium

I have Hashimoto's and have been getting various tests done privately to check my vitamin levels. A couple of results have come back as being excessively high and I can't figure out why, as I'm not taking them as supplements. Has anyone else experienced this or know what the cause might be? Results are below:

Vitamin B12 - 201 pmol/L (Range: 25.1 - 165)

Magnesium - 1.04 mmol/L (Range: 0.6 - 1)

Should I be worried? I'm currently taking Levo 50mcg, T3 25mcg (gradually increasing).

Hi I had high Vit B12 - well over range like you in a recent blood test result. Don’t take B12. Both GP and consultant dismissed it as not important. Do you eat a lot of meat?

No, not really. The reason it worried me was because my previous reading, just a month earlier, was 58. I don't understand why it jumped so much, though someone else has commented that it may have been due to me having changed my diet to be dairy and gluten free. The narrative provided with the results makes you worry more when they suggest that you might have problems with your liver or kidney 😕

I think you might want to talk to your GP about your results. It’s better to have that discussion than worrying. I was worried but then I wasn’t after the GP reassured me 😊

That isn't a very high level and can be sometimes the liver dumping the B12 into the bloodstream that's all. Now your metabolism is working better this may be the case.

Thank you, that's helpful to know. My previous result, just a month earlier, was 58 and the commentary provided with the results suggested that there may be an issue with my liver. But what you're saying makes sense. I had been thinking about taking a B12 supplement but it looks like I don't need to now.

Hello, I have graves disease and I am currently on block and replace with carbimazole and levothyroxine. I haven't been feeling great recently.Ive had four migraines in 4 weeks(currently in the midst of another)feeling shaky, racing heart and decreased appetite. I have just done a medichecks thyroid blood test package.everything came back ok except my vitamin B12 active came back as >256 (25.1-165) the Drs advice from medichecks was to stop B12 supplements but I have never taken any. I contacted them by web chat and explained this and there advice was to contact my GP for a full blood count and liver function test.I have done this and emailed them my medichecks results.Unfortunately the earliest appointment is next Wednesday over the phone. They have been concerned recently about my white blood count and my endo said if it went too low I'd have to stop the carbimazole My neutrophils have been 1.8 on 8th June and 2.6 on 16th June.I wonder if this has effected my B12 in some way and caused it to go over range. I suppose I'll find out when I talk to the doctor.Thought I'd got rid of the migraines but they're back with avengance. Hope this helps in your situation.

Thank you, there are so many variables to consider! I hope you find the answers soon. Someone else has suggested that my metabolism may have improved now that I'm on better medication so that might be it.

I can't comment on magnesium but I can on B12. Ask your doctor but in my experience there's no problem having a high level of B12. I have pernicious anaemia which so I can't absorb B12 from food. So I have a B12 injection every 90 days. This means that sometimes my B12 level is over 1,000. The doctor has seen this and said it is fine.

Exactly my GPS reaction. I have B12 injections every 90days and also ridiculously they also often test a week after I’ve had these jabs, which obviously is going to record a high level.

Why not a week before I’m dues B12 to see how things really are...unless there’s some logic that I can’t see in doing this. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yes I have no idea either. The trouble is I think that B12 deficiency is really beyond the level of an average GP. Whilst they know how to correct it with B12 injections or even tablets they don't understand much about what causes it or how it makes you feel. Mine was found by chance. I was feeling awful and they set up a blood test for bicarbonate. The nurse taking the blood misread BIC as B12 and that was tested and came back lower than anyone in the doctors had ever seen.

Likewise.But a very long story.

Your magnesium level is only a teeny bit over-range, so nothing to worry about. Not really even worth testing magnesium, really, due to the way the body handles magnesium. Most people are deficient anyway, whatever their test results say, because soils are depleated. :)

As your previous B12 wasn't high, I would think it likely to be your liver readjusting as you change medication and diet. Worth keeping an eye on your blood sugar to be safe though. Magnesium testing not terribly useful (needs to be RBC not serum, which only shows a severe deficiency) unlike magnesium, so I'd just try a supplement. I use Better You flakes in a footbath and the oil spray on damp skin in the evenings. Amazing stuff! And it will help with the various elements of methylation, should it be a little below par.
