A couple of months ago I had a cough and cold. The cough went onto my chest and then it caused my thyroid to become inflamed and very painful. My neck was painful and difficult to move and my thyroid very painful to the touch. I was prescribed penicillin and within 2 days the pain subsided and everything went back to normal.
I look after my grandchildren and one of them has a cough and cold.
I’ve developed a small cough but I’m now in terrible pain with my neck and thyroid again.
I don’t want more penicillin. My GP gave no explanation as to what it is.
What can it be and how can I prevent it from happening or how do I treat it?

I am not medically qualified but if you are in pain with an inflamed neck orthyroid gland. I would go to the A&E - just to get checked over as you could have some infection that could need penicillin.
I had penicillin for the same thing in March. I’ve done a econsult with my GP. They’re not very helpful and make me feel like I’m a nuisance. I was just wondering if anyone else knew what this could be and how to treat it
I understand completely i.e. that you've gone to the GP - they've given you a prescription but it has not relieved you of your pain. This is their job, i.e. that they help/advise and just not send the patient away with a prescription, especially when whatever they've prescribed isn't relieving them..
We are on this forum, because having a dysfunctional thyroid gland can give us many clinical symptoms so it is right that you have put your query on the forum. It is surprising how many people have had similar effects when they have hypo.
Just go to the A&E as you're now in pain again and maybe, hopefully, they will x-ray to see if it reveals anything. Don't mention anything about hypothyroidism unless they ask. Just concentrate on your neck pain. It might be, as you state, due to an inflamed thyroid gland.
This is an excerpt from the following link:-
"Treatment for thyroid pain includes anti-inflammatory medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Steroids such as prednisone may be used if pain is severe."
Did the pain move from one side to the other? If so have they considered subacute thyroiditis. I had this in November, just started out of the blue following a virus, never had any problems before with my thyroid. Now taking levothyroxine but hopefully it may return to normal.
