Update on Alcohol

Well everyone, I finally had a few drinks. My drink of choice was, Tito’s Vodka. (It is gluten free) I made sure to eat before I started drinking. I didn’t mix it with any fruit juice. I drank it straight with a water back. I had no hangover, nor headache. I was able to get up and function the next day. I know that some of us with Hashimotos have a terrible experience after indulging in alcohol. I’m not encouraging anyone to drink, just sharing my experience if it helps anyone......

Hi ZakiAli, I’m too much of a light weight when it comes to alcohol to handle neat vodka, but glad you’ve found an alcoholic drink you can tolerate! 🍸Sometimes it’s hard socially if you have a restrictive diet….I’m a GF pescatarian with a nut allergy!

Yup, I sometimes go the vodka soda route in a bar, esp if they have some nice fruit to throw in it. Raspberry or something! That being said, I drank draft lager with the footie in a pub yesterday and am alive and well this morning, even though gluten and I are not exactly bessie mates. I just seem to get anyway with it occasionally. But not often!

As part of my 5 a day, I eat grapes in a squashed liquid fermented form. Oh, and fruit gums!

I have a little story about vodka: A few years ago my then partner and I were invited to a party to welcome an important visiting scholar (from Lithuania) to our group at the university. While we didn't particularly want to attend, it was an honour so we accepted. A couple of days before the event I was laid low with a truly diabolical 'flu. We decided that we would take two cars so that I could welcome the guest, say something nice then beat a fast retreat explaining that I was ill. Well I arrived, I explained in great detail that I couldn't stay but a few minutes etc etc. They said oh we completely understand but first you must try a small glass of the vodka that the guest had brought from Lithuania. OMG I thought, I rarely touch hard liquor, I am going to have to lie down and sleep in a quiet corner on the back lawn. But I drank it, it was actually delicious. And then a miracle happened! All of my symptoms disappeared! I felt perfectly well. My head was clear, my throat was no longer sore, I was normal. I stayed at the party and people asked how come? I told them that the vodka seemed to be magical. They all agreed that it was an excellent vodka, but none of them were as lucky as I had been.
