Hi all, I have Hashimotos 3+yrs and hypothyroidism. After a lot of trial and error im currently on t3 only medication. I take it 3 times a day roughly around the same times but I mostly judge on symptoms (If I start to feel hypo I will take it a bit earlier than my normal time etc). So two days ago I over ate a bag of Brazil nuts (I ate about 19-15 of them) . That night I had z mild nosebleed which is usually a sign of overmedication for me so I didn't take my evening t3 as I felt fine. The next morning I still felt fine( good energy etc so I taught Id hold off on my morning dose and take it when I felt the need to. All day yesterday I've not taken any meds and had loads of energy etc and last night I had the best sleep I've had in a long time. Its now the next morning and I still feel great so I haven't taken any meds again. I've no idea why I'm feeling so good. Could it be the selenium in the Brazil nuts?

Could it be the selenium in the Brazil nuts?
Do you know for definite that your Brazil nuts contain selenium? Does the packet say "Grown in selenium rich soil" and does it state the selenium content? If not then there's every chance they contain little to no selenium.
As you have Hashi's, and this is known to cause fluctuations in symptoms and test results, it could be that you are going through a stage of your Hashi's where you have more hormone and don't actually need T3 at the moment, it's often necessary to either stop meds for a few days or alter dose with Hashi's activity, i.e when the immune system attacks and the thyroid releases a load of hormone (this is where the antibodies come in and mop up the mess).
Hi SeasideSusie, I've just checked the packet and your right It doesn't say selenium! I assumed all Brazil nuts contained it naturally. Maybe it is because my immune system is not attacking me at the moment. Thank you for your reply. This is the most normal ive felt inover 3 years! However I know it won't last so I'm enjoying it while I can!

If you want Brazil nuts that do contain selenium, members have been kind enough to pass on the following information to me:
Sainsburys SO organic brazil nuts contain 50mcg selenium per 30g serving of nuts
sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/pro...
and their Fairtrade ones have 75mcg selenium per 30g serving
sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui/pro...
One member has said that M&S Natural Brazil Nuts say "harvested by hand in the Amazon forest and naturally high in selenium".
Also, check out Aldi's "The Foodie Market" Brazil nuts, the packaging is said to show selenium content as 79mcg per 30g serving.
Another one is 'My Garden of Eden' Brazil nuts from Home Bargains.. They say "High in Selenium and high in vitamin E" on the front of the packet and the Nutritional Information says "one serving (25g) gives 63ug of Selenium".
Do check that everything is still the same, I don't have any of these shops anywhere near me.
This link shows selenium content in Brazil nuts and the areas where selenium content in soil is highest:
I could be wrong but I don't think that not stating selenium on the packet means your brazils didn't contain it. Selenium would need to be listed if it had been added but as a naturally occurring ingredient it needn't be, and, your brazils could have contained just as much as those others.
I thought the same Nessynu, it would be wonderful for you if you just needed a few Brazil nuts each day to feel good! Fingers crossed for you.
