An unusual one!

Hey guys! I hope you are all keeping safe and well.

This one is just an update rather than a question, but an unusual one for sure.

I’ve only ever tried to reduce my levothyroxcine twice in the past. Once when I started NDT and once when I started T3. I reduced by 25mcg I think from 125mcg and felt awful after three weeks both times and upped the levothyroxcine again.

I’m only levothyroxcine only at the moment and trialling liquid levothyroxcine.

Been on it six weeks and feel no better or worse BUT I’ve just realised that I’ve been taking the wrong dose. I’ve been taking 0.5ml instead of 5!

I don’t understand why I don’t feel dreadful. It’s weird. And the hope in me is praying that if I actually take the correct dose it will make me feel well. Like actually fully well and able to be normal and not make such silly mistakes with foggy brain!

Anyway that’s me for today! Onwards!

It seems to happen to a lot of people—whether it happens by accident or by design—that going off levothyroxine actually makes them feel better (for a while). If you browse the forum often, you’ll see posts from people who’ve stopped taking it saying “Ah, it was the levothyroxine making me feel so ill! I’m never going back on that poison!” Only to be followed a few weeks later by a post, usually with a blood test result attached, that shows their FT3 and FT4 at the bottom of or even below the laboratory reference range, with the words, “Starting to feel awful, what should I do?”

Honestly, I don’t really understand it—why people initially feel ok. But I’ve seen it happen over and over again. I’ve even done it myself (though in my case it was with NDT—a mistake I won’t be making again... :( ).

So. Probably best to start taking that 5ml sooner rather than later. Just wondering whether it might be wise to work your way back up to that though. How many μg Levo are in 5ml?

Well this is what’s strange, because of what’s happened historically I feel that I do need levothyroxcine so I don’t think I would ever try and come off it.

5ml is 125mcg so I’ll be going from zero to 125 pretty fast. I’ll discuss with pharmacist but guess they’ll suggest gradual increments.

Guna get a blood test just to see where I am now. Just for kicks. I guess the hope in me is praying that liquid works better for me so much so that even a weeny amount if better than full amount on pills. I reek of desperation ha!

LOL, “reek of desperation”. :D

No, completely understandable. So you’ve been taking 12.5mcg I think (if my maths hasn’t let me down). Yep, bit of a drop...

How do you even measure 0.5ml?? In a pipette? That’s such a tiny amount. Just going to check this, cos I can see me doing something daft (I also have form 😂)—you’re absolutely sure you’ve only been taking 0.5ml and not, say, 2.5ml? 2.5ml is the small end of a Calpol spoon, if you’ve ever seen one of those?

A blood test certainly would be interesting.

Yeh I’ve got a long tube that I stick in the bottle and suck it up then squirt in to my mouth.

I actually measured 5ml the other day and it perfectly fits in the plastic spoon I was given so I’ve defo taken wrong amount.

I really thought I was paying attention and knew what I was doing too! How I drive and work is a mystery!!

:D :D :D

Like I said, I’ve been known to do truly daft things, so no judgement here. :D

Hey there Caz -

I can ditto that - when brain fogged it's difficult to see the wood for the trees :

Use the spoon, and lick it thoroughly as you're some ground to make up :

oops :)It's not just you , i'm glad Jazzw has done the maths cos i'm lost. But if she's right about the 12.5 , then you 've pretty much had 6 weeks on next to no levo.

I wonder if that would have the same effect as the often reported but shortlived, 'stopped levo =felt better' experiment and that's why you don't feel awful as expected.

Lab results will be interesting .

looks like this is one time you won't have to argue with the doctor for an increase..

p.s

As long as you always drive the same route to work it's fine ... as long as no one put bollards where there didn't used to be any :)
