Vitamin D recommendation - Better You spray possibly causing headaches

CornishChick profile image
19 Replies

I have been taking Better You for 3 years, and have got my dire level from 22 to 99. However, since this time, I have developed dreadful headaches several times a week (I hadn’t had one for years since stopping work to have children). I have had all sorts of tests and had an mri, but nothing has been shown as an issue. They are so severe, I cannot sleep and sometimes they wake me in the night.

When I stop taking the spray, my headaches stop, until I restart. I’m almost convinced this spray is causing the issue and therefore wish to try and alternative vitamin D3 around 3,000 IU/day to test my theory. I have tried stopping all other supplements systematically, but the headaches continue regardless.

Is anyone able to recommend an alternative Vitamin D3 please? Thank you very much in advance.

Headaches are hypothyroid symptom

More likely vitamin D is helping improve how you use thyroid hormones and you need dose adjustment in thyroid levels

Thank you. I’ve never had headaches before now (25 years on levo) and my latest results including T3 are all nicely in range. I’ll try the alternative D that Seasidesusie recommends and see if they go for good. If so, I shall be eternally grateful as they’ve been debilitating for quite a few years, and never pleasant with two young children to look after! If not, I’ll repost with results in case you think I need tweaking. It may be I need to adjust like you say.

What are your most recent thyroid results (when on vitamin D)

Sorry for the delay, I can’t find my latest results, so will request another print out. My previous results I think were similar at:-T4 16.6 (9-19)

T3 4.7 (2.9-4.9)

TSH 0.004 (0.35-4.94)

Hi I’ve got my latest bloods SlowDragon at 9/12/20.T4 16.4 (9-19)

TSH 0.01 (0.35-4.94)

They forgot to do my T3. I have stopped taking T3, hence why my TSH has changed. Prior to starting it, I was towards the top of the range. I stopped it when I suspected T3 of causing the headaches. If the change of vitamin D brand stops the headaches, I will retest my T3 and ask for advice about restarting it.

Important to test TSH Ft4 and Ft3 together

Cheapest option is Monitor My Health at £26.10 if ordered via Thyroid U.K.

Always test as early as possible in morning before eating or drinking anything other than water and last dose levothyroxine 24 hours before test

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Vitamin levels frequently drop when T3 is withdrawn

Thank you, yes I follow all of that that already.

Supplements I take B complex, B12, selenium, K, D, high dose C, magnesium also Pregnenalone as my DHEA is non existent. That hasn’t helped, my levels are no better and if I don’t take an antihistamine at night, I still wake around 1-2am with a start (definitely feels like an injection of adrenaline).

I mostly just let my GP do my bloods twice a year due to costs, but thank you for that as I may do some additional testing if I can. Even before I took T3, my T3 levels were always towards the top of the range. Not to say I wouldn’t benefit from it though maybe?

Just wondered if you’d seen my previous post SlowDragon ? Unfortunately my headaches continue despite changing the vitamin D brand, so I’m back to the drawing board. Many thanks for any help anyone can offer.

What thyroid hormones are you taking

Do you always get same brand of levothyroxine/T3

Do you split T3 dose

What are latest vitamin results - folate, ferritin and B12

Perhaps look at vitamin D lamp ( very expensive)

I take just levothyroxine at the moment. I stopped the T3 in case it was that causing the headaches, I still have a stash of privately sourced which cost me a fortune, so am happy to re start if necessary.

Yes I always insist on the same brand of levothyroxine.

My latest vitamin D result was about 99, so I’m happy the supplements are working. Do you think that I’d still need a lamp? I’m hoping not really as a stay at home Mum, I don’t have much spare cash.

I haven’t tested my vitamins for a while simply due to the cost. However, I have previously had lowish ferritin and been advised on here to eat lots of pate. I went mad on the stuff for maybe a year and unfortunately have put myself off it! So that could still be low, but I’m unsure what else to do about it.

Thank you.

No if vitamin D is 99nmol you don't need a lamp

As you've stopped the supplement and the headaches stopped, then when restarting the supplement the headaches came back, it seems very likely that the supplement is the cause of the headaches.

The Vit D spray contains a lot of excipients, maybe one of those is causing the problem.

I use a clean Vit D supplement with just Vit D and extra virgin olive oil, nothing else - Doctor's Best D3 softgels. You could give them a try and see how you get on. If you still get a problem then it will the Vit D that's causing the problem. I don't think they do a 3,000iu dose but definitely do 1,000iu, 2,000iu and 5,000iu. Don't choose the 2,500iu Vegan D3 as that does have excipients.

That’s fantastic, thank you so much, I’ll order some now to try.

Hi my vitamin D has arrived. I’ve tried the 5,000iu dose. Please could you tell me what I need to increase my magnesium and vitamin K to for this dose of vitamin D? Thank you.

90-100mcg Vit K2-mk7 is enough for up to 10,000iu D3.

Magnesium you just take the dose recommended on the pack regardless of amount of D3.

Was this brand vitamin D no good?

CornishChick profile image

I bought a comparative brand with identical ingredients and no excipients which someone else recommended. It was quite a bit cheaper but looks similar quality. Headaches continue at 1-2 a week lasting for 24-48 hours and are quite debilitating.

Any other suggestions much appreciated!

Thank you.

I took Better You for ages but when it was out of stock recently I decided to try another brand, and I'm glad I did. It's more natural and has a far nicer taste so I'm sticking with this one in future.
