Pharmacists can supply alternative to levothyroxine 12.5mcg tablets

The Department of Health and Social Care has issued a new serious shortage protocol to address the “significant ongoing disruption” in supply of levothyroxine 12.5mcg tablets.

The SSP – which was introduced with “immediate effect” on Wednesday (February 3) – advises pharmacists that they can supply one levothyroxine 25mcg tablet, to be taken on alternate days, when presented with a prescription for levothyroxine 12.5mcg tablets.

Never seen anyone on here prescribed 12.5mcg tablets

12.5mcg tablet is only made by Teva and is £12.49 per 28 tablets

25mcg levothyroxine for comparison is £1.54 per 28 tablets

50mcg levothyroxine is £1.26 per 28 tablets

100mcg levothyroxine is £1.26 per 28 tablets

I was - for one prescription. I asked, they agreed, and never again because I did not like Teva. I didn't know the price at the time.

But some must be - otherwise there couldn't be a shortage! :-)
