Contraception

Hi All,

Does anyone with Hashimoto’s have any experience of hormonal contraception? I’ve got a copper coil but since having it my periods are 12 days long and heavy. I’ve always had issues with breakthrough bleeding on pills in the past - the mini pill made me have 100 day periods! Plus I’m scared of hormones as my hormones are already mental due to Hashimoto’s!

My GP has suggested maybe the injection or the kyleena coil - any thoughts?

Thanks

It is normal for the copper coil to make your periods heavier and last longer, most women report that side-effect, so I don't think hashimotos plays into it much.

I'm not sure about the impact of other forms of hormonal birth control on hashis though.

Yes, that’s why I want it out!

personal experience , and we're all different , but for what it's worth

1. progesterone (mini pill) ------ loss of libido

2. depo provera injection (injection every 3 months) -----loss of periods completely which at the time i thought was a bonus... but see (4)

3. cap (no hormones)----- bit of a faff , but with hindsight worth it to not have hormones messed with.

4.depo provera injection again .. just once... never again , realised within 48hrs it made me have an extremely short and violent temper, which i'd previously thought was 'just me' .

No one believes me , but 'i know what i know' there is no doubt it had a very nasty effect on my temper like a pressure cooker, building up and then hitting children, only time in my life i've ever hit anybody i was on this.

when i took it again after several years off, i'd hit my toddler and my 8 yr old boy within 48 hrs of the injection, Stopped it .... never hit anyone again.

5.Hormone coil -mirena (progestrogen) light periods , loss of libido, damn thing kept wandering around and having to be removed/replaced.

6, Finally had enough of the lot of em and got sterilised... best thing i ever did,

I definitely believe you. I know a few people who changed rapidly when they started taking the pill. One of my friends suddenly became suicidal and didn’t know why. As soon as she stopped the pill she was fine again. The pill certainly doesn’t work for everyone. I’ve been on it for way too long. I’ve read that it could have caused my Hashi’s, or at least been a factor. But then so could other things so who knows 🤷‍♀️. I really want to come off it and see if I feel any benefits but my GP said I may as well stay on it until I hit 50 now which is a couple of years away yet. I’m glad you feel ok now. X

Funny you should reply to this today , as after conversation on way to work , i was going to add something else anyway. Re. the 'contraceptive implant' (that goes into the arm)

Turns out this too can present problems if you're unlucky... daughter has had one before , no probs and it was removed easily when it ran out, but then 2nd one was 'difficult to find ' and needed another appointment to be made to remove it, so they organised that , but in the meantime went ahead and put the replacement in the other arm anyway.

Then there was a complete shambles re. attempts to remove the 'lost' one, which it seems had been put in too deep into the muscle, and is now way too close to her ulnar nerve to let anyone but a skilled surgeon attempt to remove it , and that comes with the risk of permanent nerve issues, (she's already got tingly fingers from the last attempt by nurse to find /remove it a year ago.)

So we decided to leave it be , all things considered.

Anyway roll on to now, and so she's had 2 in for a year (so slightly higher dose progestrogen ), periods have become a nightmare over the last 6 months and she wants the latest one out to see if having 2 in is what's causing the bad periods....

But she'll still be stuck with the one that was a problem to remove, so will still be getting some progestrogen from that for an indeterminate amount of years, whether she wants it or not. and be living in an uncomfortable hinterland of "if you want to get pregnant it might be difficult, and if you don't want to get pregnant you're probably not protected and will still have to do something else.... or risk permanently messing up your nerve in your arm to remove it.

It IS rare for them to be put in wrong ... but when they are ,it's a bit of a problem.

Any way between us both this morning we have now solved the entire, unfair , contraception ,"mess up your hormones vs unwanted pregnancy ?" problem that women have had to deal with alone since the dawn of time., and so i though i'd share it.....

All males will donate as much sperm as they like up till the age of 20, and it will be frozen for them.

All males will then be given a vasectomy.

Any males who decide they want children will have to pass some sort of 'maturity' test before they can have back some sperm.

All women will be allowed, often for the first time in their lives to just let their own body do what it wants every month, and find out what it feels like without added progestrogen or estrogen.

simples!

Your poor daughter, how awful. Really sorry to hear that. I didn’t know they could get stuck like that. Jeez.

Wow. I have no idea what that would feel like now!!! I’m so tempted to come off it and see what happens 😊. Xx

lol .....getting pregnant ?

Mind you, what do i know ?

i've always done it wrong ... i got pregnant on the pill and then had negative pregnancy test , and then had a period, and then a positive pregnancy test ,and then a nice doctor finding a baby's heartbeat, and then stopped taking the pill (and smoking and drinking rum) when i was about 4 months pregnant.

Amazingly .... the baby appears to be fine ... (it's 29 now)

Ha ha not at my age! 😂

I just wondered if it may help with hashi’s. But my GP said I may as well stay on it until I’m 50 now. It’s only a few years away so maybe I could wait! xx

Thank you. That’s really helpful 👍 Didn’t even know about the cap, or sterilisation for that matter!

Mirena coil worked for me. I have endometriosis and fibroids.

Also if your BMI is good then enquire about the patch.

Thanks for all the replies! The coil is out and my period seems much lighter and shorter 👍
