Tinnitus and hyperthyroidism connection

Dear members,

Does anybody suffer with tinnitus as well as hyper thyroid? These two problems appeared for me simultaneously so I wonder if there's any connection. Has Anybody had the same experience and what helped? Any advice as what direction to go to look for answers will be appreciated. GP ignored complaints about tinnitus. I'm prescribed 40mg of carbimazole daily at the moment. 3 weeks into taking it and not much of an effect.

Thanks in advance.

Tinnitus often hypo / under medicated sign. But can also be hyper related. Sometimes pounding heart-rate causes tinnitus.

Did it develop with initial symptoms or since being on medication?

Tinnitus developed with symptoms. Carbimazole seems to have no effect ( after 3 weeks) neither on tinnitus nor on heart ( judging by my pulse - 95-100 is an everyday measure).

Strongly recommend getting full thyroid and vitamin testing done

See what’s going on

Carbimazole may need tweaking

Low vitamins often need improving with autoimmune Graves’ disease or with Hashimoto’s

Important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Thank you very much. Ive tested for them. D, b12, magnesium were low. Folate, feritin seem ok. Ive got 4weeks of b12 injections, have been taking d3 supplement. I hope to retest my bloods in a week or two. So far 3 weeks later no improve on anything.

How low was vitamin D How much vitamin D are you currently taking

As you have B12 injections it’s recommended also to supplement a good quality daily vitamin B complex, one with folate in (not folic acid) may be beneficial.

This can help keep all B vitamins in balance and will help maintain B12 levels too between injections

Difference between folate and folic acid

chriskresser.com/folate-vs-...

Many Hashimoto’s patients have MTHFR gene variation and can have trouble processing folic acid.

B vitamins best taken after breakfast

Igennus Super B is good quality and cheap vitamin B complex. Contains folate. Full dose is two tablets per day. Many/most people may only need one tablet per day. Certainly only start on one per day (or even half tablet per day for first couple of weeks)

Or Thorne Basic B is another option that contain folate, but is large capsule

If you are taking vitamin B complex, or any supplements containing biotin, remember to stop these 7 days before ALL BLOOD TESTS , as biotin can falsely affect test results

Thank you very much for your advice! Very useful!Vitamine D 49 nmol/L

I can't understand it's good range. Looks like increased risk of inadequacy

GP prescribed Altavits D3 25000 IU once a week for 6 weeks.

She also prescribed me B12 injections for 4 weeks. My B12 was 396. Range 200-1100.

Ferritin 40.0 ng/ml. Range 6.9- 282.5

After 2 weeks of taking that dose of Vit D3 my calcium went up and is a bit over the norm. ive just started taking K2 as well.

Aiming to improve vitamin D to at least around 80nmol and around 100nmol maybe better

Once you Improve level, very likely you will need on going maintenance dose to keep it there.

Test twice yearly via vitamindtest.org.uk

Vitamin D mouth spray by Better You is very effective as it avoids poor gut function. There’s a version made that also contains vitamin K2 Mk7 - (1 spray = 1000iu)

Ferritin is also far too low

Are you vegetarian or vegan?

Frequently with Graves’ disease ferritin is high

Low Ferritin more often associated with Hashimoto’s.

Have you had TSI or Trab antibodies tested to confirm Graves Disease

Look at increasing iron rich foods in diet.

Aiming to improve ferritin to at least 70

Thanks a mill SlowDragon for all this info. I was going to contact you, so i appreciate your time!I am not a vegetarian. I eat red meat every other day.

I haven't been diagnosed with either Graves or Hashimoto's yet. But my bloods in January showed my T4free and T3free very high. GP tested only for TROab <15 ( range 2-34). So I understand I need more tests done. But all symptoms as if I have Graves.

I'll be working on bringing my vitamins and minerals levels up while testing my thyroid further.

Thanks again.

Hashimoto’s frequently starts with transient hyperthyroid results and symptoms

It’s not true hyperthyroidism. But sudden release of thyroid hormones as thyroid cells break down

We see many early stage Hashimoto’s patients where medics assume it’s Graves’ disease

I would insist on TSI or Trab thyroid antibodies tested for Graves’ disease

TPO <15 (2-34)

To test for Hashimoto’s you need TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested

NHS refuses to test TG antibodies if TPO are negative
