Woken up with painful ring finger

Hi all I’ve been hypo/hashi for 12 years. I’ve recently reduced my T4 slightly and introduced T3.

I suspect I’m currently slightly under medicated but have bloods due this weekend.

Today I’ve woken with a very sore ring finger on my left hand as if someone has twisted it backwards all night long. It also feels a bit numb.

Never had this before but is it a hypo symptom as I recall my mother also used to get this and she’s hypo too.

Carpel tunnel....very common when under medicated, especially low Ft3

In my case, I wasn’t able to wear my wedding, eternity and engagement rings for the last year because I think my joints were just a bit more swollen. I certain,y couldn’t sleep with them on like I used to do. They were also too painful during the day, even the wedding ring, which is a simple gold band and none of them are too small. I felt really sorry about that as I am very fond of those rings. I am now able to wear my wedding ring all the time since starting T3... I could be wearing the other two during the day now as well if I chose. Still can sleep in them all like before!

With me, I have put it down to (and I am speculating) low T3 causing joint swelling.

Strange we are pointing to T3 as I’ve only been taking it 2 months but have been on T4 for 12 years. This is the first time I’ve ever had this pain and I’ve not been wearing rings for about a year now since we are in lockdown.

This is very interesting Dk123 as I’ve started with finger swelling and poor circulation to fingers. I’m 5 weeks into T3 trial and never had this on Levo only.

Did you reduce your T4 at the same time as starting T3?

One week prior to starting T3 I reduced Levo by 25mcg. Now on 125mcg Levo and 2x 5 T3 (will increase this after testing levels next week)

I lowered my T4 from 150mcg to 133mcg about 6 weeks after commencing T3 2x5mcg per day (morning and lunchtime).

My problems have started about 4 weeks after lowering T4 so perhaps I’m just under medicated and need more.

It’s hard to say if your problem is due to starting T3 or lowering T4. Mine certainly points to it being caused by lowering T4.

Having bloods on Sat so should know soon enough!

Hi Dk123. I have carpal tunnel and I had weird sudden pains now and again in my second finger. They initially vanished when I started on t3 but within a couple of days came back with vengeance along with other joint pains and aches. I immediately went back up to my old levo dose and they were much less frequent again. So I’m wondering if it could be too big a t4 drop for you or you need a higher t3 dose.
