Suppressed TSH

Hi all

I went to have a blood test with the GP and as part of it they monitored my thyroid level

They’ve only done TSH and refuse to measure T4 and T3 but they have called saying my TSH aid 0.03 and that they are concerned that this is too low

My question is, is it perfectly normal for TSH to be suppressed on thyroid medication? As when I tested myself via Medichecks, my T4 and T3 were just above range

I want to strike the balance of optimal T4 and T3 but fear my GP will try and reduce the dose based on TSH alone. When it was 7.2 six months ago she was reluctant to treat it, which infuriates me

Absolutely essential to regularly retest vitamins too

Low vitamin levels tend to lower TSH

What vitamin supplements are you currently taking

Remember to stop taking any supplements that contain biotin a week before ALL BLOOD TESTS as biotin can falsely affect test results

For full Thyroid evaluation you need TSH, FT4 and FT3 plus both TPO and TG thyroid antibodies tested. Also EXTREMELY important to test vitamin D, folate, ferritin and B12

Low vitamin levels are extremely common, as you have Hashimoto’s

Ask GP to test vitamin levels or include in private testing

Recommended on here that all thyroid blood tests should ideally be done as early as possible in morning and before eating or drinking anything other than water .

Last dose of Levothyroxine 24 hours prior to blood test. (taking delayed dose immediately after blood draw).

This gives highest TSH, lowest FT4 and most consistent results. (Patient to patient tip)

Is this how you do your tests?

Private tests are available as NHS currently rarely tests Ft3 or thyroid antibodies or all relevant vitamins

List of private testing options

Medichecks Thyroid plus antibodies and vitamins

medichecks.com/products/adv...

Thriva Thyroid plus antibodies and vitamins By DIY fingerpick test

Thriva also offer just vitamin testing

Blue Horizon Thyroid Premium Gold includes antibodies, cortisol and vitamins by DIY fingerprick test

If you can get GP to test vitamins and antibodies then cheapest option for just TSH, FT4 and FT3

£29 (via NHS private service ) and 10% off down to £26.10 if go on thyroid uk for code

Also vitamin D available as separate test via MMH

Or alternative Vitamin D NHS postal kit

I should also add that I went in for a different blood test, but they ended up measuring my thyroid m. As I was unaware that I was being tested, I took my normal thyroid dose about an hour before which will have suppressed TSH even more I’m sure

TSH takes weeks to respond

Ft4 would be falsely high if taken levothyroxine before blood test

If they measured Ft4 but unfortunately they’re going to give me their advice based on TSH only (and after I took a dose of Levo as I wasn’t expecting the test)

TSH is not a thyroid hormone and I think many doctors are unaware of this fact. TSH is from the pituitary gland and rises as the thyroid gland is struggling..

They should concentrate more on a Free T3 and Free T4 result which are rarely tested.

No just levothyroxine - and as they surprised me by measuring TSH (I actually wanted another thing measured in my blood as part of a fertility check up) I took my dose as normal before the blood test

Did you mean to say your FT4 and FT3 were just ABOVE range when last tested.

If so, you need to reduce in that basis. Having your FT3 above range puts you at risk of osteoporosis and heart problems.

Can you ask for FT3 and FT4 to be tested because your TSH is below the NHS range? I’m having a similar problem- TSH of 0.09, nothing else tested and on 75mcg Levo only. I’m having a retest tomorrow- told them I forgot to stop my B complex a week before and it may have messed up the test. That’s not true but it’s got me another test. They might just retest TSH, though! If so I’ll get a private test.I had the same question as you - what does it mean to have very low TSH when only taking Levo? I know T4 and T3 are more important but the TSH must mean something.
