Microgynon and Thyroxine

Hello, first time poster on here. Was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in April which seems to have developed following pregnancy. I am hoping to start a new round of ivf in the new year and the gynaecologist has put me on microgynon to regulate my periods as I also have endometriosis. For the past week and a half of being on microgynon and thyroxine have been awful- it’s like before I was diagnosed. Just been so ill and wiped out. I’ve had awful painful fatigue, headaches, dizziness, aches and body temp all over the place. The doc is sending me for a blood test to check thyroid before we take any actions.

I wanted to see if anyone else has had a similar experience with these two meds?

Thanks in advance 🙂

Whatever else is needed, make sure that your vitamins and minerals are as good as you can get. Most doctors don't know much about nutrition unfortunately.

Some years ago I was treated by a nutritional doctor. One of the things I remember him saying was that when you are pregnant the baby takes whatever it needs and this may leave the mother deficient. Your recent pregnancy may have left you with deficiencies. He also said that if your nutritional level is good, then any medical problem will present itself more clearly and won't be confused by signs of deficiency.

If you need to find a qualified nutritionist near you try bant.org.uk which is the website for BANT the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine and has a section titled Find a Practitioner.

I used to take Dianette and my GP made me stop taking it in my mid 40s. I felt really well on it but she was concerned about the long term affects on me. I do wonder if being on the pill since I was 15 has affected my thyroid but years ago everyone used this as a contraceptive.

I am just adding this interesting link.

I am not medically qualified but I doubt you should take these together as they might interfere with each other.

I'd take one in the morning and another at night.

Microgynon is the cheapest pill so the NHS offer it first. It's known to cause a lot of side effects. Personally I felt miserable on it, suicidally depressed. I think as Scrumbler says the oestrogen affects your thyroid hormones, but it can often causes issues even in people with no thyroid issues (I used it years before I became hypothyroid). You might want to ask your doctor to let you try another one. Apparently Yasmin carries fewer side effects.

The NHS website itself notes an interaction between contraceptive pills and levothyroxine. See section 7 of the below:

nhs.uk/medicines/levothyrox...

High levels of oestrogen in the blood increase levels of thyroid binding globulin (TBG) which prevents thyroid hormone from being used by the cells, essentially leaving you hypo.

If you must take a contraceptive pill, try to take it as far apart from your thyroid medication as possible (I used to do 7am thyroxine, 7pm contraceptive as an example).

Might also be worth sharing your results as irregular periods and difficulty conceiving are symptoms of hypothyroidism. You may find that treating your thyroid might resolve these without use of a contraceptive which in someways can mask and compound the problem.

Thank you all so much. The timing of taking the two tablets could be key so will try and take the pill at night. I have had fertility issues for years and our little boy was conceived through ivf in 2019 after trying unsuccessfully for over 6 years and suffering a number of miscarriages. My gynaecologist is of the mind that I ‘regulate’ my cycle and ease the horrendous heavy bleeding to have some eggs harvested and frozen in the new year to then start ivf.

I have a horrible feeling that all of this may effect my thyroid levels too and end up making me feel this rubbish. Why don’t GPS understand hormones ☹️
