Hi there... I want a full thyroid test done.. can someone suggest a company to do this? I know of medichecks but I’m wondering whether it would require a venous draw or is finger prick sufficient?

Many thanks!

Medichecks do a ‘thyriod Thursday’ when it’s usually on offer. You can opt for venous or finger prick at the time of check out. Venous will cost slightly more because you’ll then book to have a phlebotomists take the blood at a private clinic, or your local surgery or hospital or someone will come to your home. The website should be able to advise you as to what’s best in your area. HTH 😊

Thanks Paula... do you think a blood draw be more accurate?

Both are accurate. Some people find it difficult to get the blood to flow with a finger prick test and one has to be careful not to squeeze it out, therefore damaging the cells. If this is your first test I would go for finger prick and see if it works for you as overall it’s cheaper. You can request more lancets if it doesn’t work first time and you have followed all the advise to get blood flowing (windmill arms, drink water, hands on warm bowl of water) you can also then request a venous kit if that doesn’t work and then book your nearest and/or cheapest nurse to draw the blood.

Make sure hands/arms are nice and warm, so blood flows easily.

There are several labs.

Thanks Shaws...do you happen to know if gp’s recognise any specific tests and the parameters?

Some GPs might if they have hypo or any of their relatives. Most seem completely ignorant of anything to do with the thyroid gland. All our 'old fashioned doctors' who were trained before blood tests were introduced, knew all the clinical symptoms and we were given a 'trial' of NDT (natural dessicated thyroid hormones) and if patient began to feel better we were diagnosed hypo.
