Does anyone know if Selenite or Selenate salt is toxic? some people told me that they are the best form of selenium
"The most toxic compound of selenium following inhalation is hydrogen selenide. Other toxic compounds are selenium dioxide, sodium selenite and selenium sulfide. Sodium selenite is the most toxic compound on oral ingestion."
For example, one study using rats (not dogs) suggested sodium selenite was 2.94 times more toxic than natural selenium yeast.1
This more natural and organic form of selenium produced by yeast is known as selenomethionine. And based upon human studies, this compound is not only less toxic, it also more closely mimics the form of the mineral found in fresh food.2
So, it’s more biologically available to the animal."
"According to those data, it was possible to classify sodium selenite as highly toxic and sodium selenate as moderately toxic to fingerlings of tilapia."
"and that selenite was the toxic form of selenium which could inhibit the normal function of the intestine. If the selenate is converted into selenite before it can exert its toxic effect the site of conversion is not isolated intestine."
Everything I have read about selenium says that the best and better absorbed forms are selenium l-selenomethionine and yeast bound selenium, and that selenite and selenate forms should be avoided and they are poorly absorbed.
What you have posted above about the selenite and selenate forms just about sums it up. Who told you that they are the best forms?
"The RDA for Selenium is 55-200 ug / day, and the aim is to achieve this. In children under 10 aim for 55ug, for adults 200 ug. After 2 weeks of Iodide supplementation (week 3), continue with the Iodide and add 25 ug / day Selenium and slowly build to 200 ug / day. The selenium should be as the Selenite, or Selenate salt, but should not be Selenomethionine or Selenium chelates, or Selenium amino acids complex, each of which has been shown not to work. Start with 25 ug / day for one week and increase to 50 ug / day, week 2. Week 3, 100 ug / day, with week 4 and ongoing 200 ug / day. Adjust doses for children."
Some spurious studies to support this protocol, together with a vast amount of impressive-sounding information, the main aim being to sell their product!! For the unwary who do not read every single word, they are liable to do themselves more harm than good. I never trust any site that has product promotion as its main aim.
Excess anything is bad for us! Definitely including water and oxygen!
Yes, in high selenium areas, animals can and do get ill.
But that does not mean that all selenite and all selenate is always bad.
Some very uncertain research was once suggesting selenite was "better" with respect to prostate cancer. But the selenomethionine and other organic selenium compounds seem less prone to causing any issues.
