My left eye has been twitching like crazy for the past 3/4 days, does anyone have any idea why this happens? I have had it before in the past but then it disappears and I don’t have it for long periods of time again.
Eye twitches : My left eye has been twitching... - Thyroid UK
Eye twitches
I have eyelid twitching in both eyes in both upper and lower lids at different times but for me my lower right lid suffers the most.
Eye stain and being tired / stressed definitely makes it worse, too much caffeine sets it off too.
My eyes were quite irritated & dry so treating with warm compress and eyelid wipes & drops have help that, the twitching has eased hugely too.
I think taking magnesium (citrate or chelate) has helped it too, I began taking magnesium as I had untreated milder hyper (nodule) probably for a long time, had migraines so remained on propranolol to treat this and then had a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes all are know to deplete magnesium.
Happens to me when I've done too much exercise, am stressed or am chronically sleep deprived. I think it's to do with cortisol.
Low potassium. When I get that, I eat a banana and it generally helps stop it. Seriously.
I'd suspect low iron or low magnesium or low potassium. If you eat a low salt/low sodium diet then the twitching could also be caused by that - salt is essential for good health.
Iron and ferritin (iron stores) must be tested before deciding whether supplementing iron is appropriate. Too much iron in the body is poisonous.
Magnesium testing is not worth doing because it is a poor test. As long as your kidneys function then it is safe to supplement magnesium (at a maximum dose of 300mg - 400mg per day) and any excess should be excreted in urine. There are lots of supplements to choose from.

Potassium : I'll just pass on this link :

If you want to try potassium when you get eye twitches then the easiest thing to try is buying Cream of Tartar from a supermarket baking section. Put quarter of a teaspoon in water and drink it. If a shortage of potassium was the cause of your twitching it should go away within five minutes. It is also possible to buy potassium supplements from supplement shops and online.
Sodium : Try quarter of a teaspoon of salt in water. If low sodium is the cause of your twitching it should stop within five minutes.
I would agree with Humanbean..
I’m absolutely sure it’s an imbalance ..and I’d be inclined to think .. in my case anyway , it’s been potassium .
When my blood levels are all good
( for me ) and I have Graves’ disease .
I DONT get eye twitches .
Before diagnosis of Graves, my eyes twitched so much at times, my eyesight was very affected by it .
I take potassium 2 or 3 times a months and haven’t
“ twitched” for a long time.
Unfortunately, eye problems are pretty normal for us thyroid patients , whether HYPO or HYPER .
Dry , itchy , twitchy, gritty eyes 👀 have always been symptoms for me .
Helped now though , by a wonderful eye Surgeon I saw Privately , three months ago ,
who prescribed
....Flourometholone 0.1% Eye Drops ... and HYLO FORTE Moisturising eye drops
The difference in my 👀 eyes is .. unbelievable !!
Wish that Eye Surgeon was a Thyroid Specialist , he was very sympathetic to my eye 👁. issues . writing to my GP to say that , whenever I need them , I was to be prescribed these two types of drops , which had been very successful in treating my Graves Disease eye problems .
Previously, My GP had always told me ,
“just buy some over the counter eye drops “ which had NEVER helped me .
THAT and other instances , are why I self Treat !
Can’t be bothered asking for help from GPs.

I think mine may be down to lack of sleep and stress, only time will tell .
So , you don’t think that your eye Twitching could be related to your Thyroid disease then ?

It’s not that I don’t think it’s down to my thyroid but at this moment I am pretty stressed with one thing or another these days, so I’m assuming that it may be that, however if it continues I will ask my endo about it. I’m due for bloods soon and we will see what they turn up. I do get very dry gritty eyes also, in fact they are so bad some mornings I can hardly open my eyes. The optician has given me drops for it but I can’t honestly say that it’s helped a great deal but they feel good when I put them in.
I get eye tics when my B12 drops below the very top of the range
I had eye twitching when my levels were too high and at one point I was scared it was TED. I rarely have them now but they would go on for days in the past.
