Hi I have been asked to increase 1 grain of NDT up to 1.5 grains daily. Would I be ok to just start this increase each morning or would I need to take the half later In the day? Just that I notice those who take T3 seem to separate their dosages throughout the day. If I dont take my 1.5 grains all in one go in the morning, then I would be worried I may forget some lunch times and would also need to remember to take on n empty stomach etc. Any advice from those on NDT would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance all.
NDT Dosage Increase: Hi I have been asked to... - Thyroid UK
NDT Dosage Increase
Hey there again :
It' all a bit trial and error - some people split their dose, others do not :
NDT was successfully used for over 100 years to treat hypothyroidism and you simply dosed to the relief of symptoms :
chewing on a little piece of dried pig thyroid and getting a bigger bit next time you reported back to the doctor if your symptoms presisted.
Sounds so simply doesn't it ?
What prompted this dose increase, symptoms or a blood test result ?
The blood tests and ranges were introduced alongside Levothyroxine as the new, better thyroid replacement treatment for hypothyroidism.
I take what I believe to be a slow release NDT and take it all in one go - 1 + 1/2 grains.
If I have a blood test at around 12 hours of my last dose my T3 will be close to or tipping just over the range, my T4 in the bottom quarter of the range and my TSH, as always, suppressed.
I dosed myself up to where I am at 1/4 grain increases every 7-10 days monitoring blood pressure and temperature - my blood pressure didn't change much but my temperature went from around 35. 4 up to around 36.6 :
Thanks for the reply. It is due to symptoms and recent bloods that it was identified I am undermedicated. I will just go to trial taking l.5 grains in the morning and see how I go. 👍
If you split dose, just get a weekly pill dispenser
That way it's easy to see if forgotten a dose
Good idea to use one regardless
I take T3 only and have done for several years now. I take one daily dose with one glass of water. I am well and symptoms are relieved.
I follow a method by Dr John Lowe (scientist/doctor/researcher who was an Adviser to thyroiduk.org before his accidental death. He himself took T3.

Hi Shaws many thanks for the reply. I have taken the 1 5 grains last 2 mornings now in one dose. 🤞 so far so good. My dilemma at present is I started on Armour NDT back in June. Now my prescription dose has increased the price for this has almost doubled. I can get Erfa NDT for a huge amount less. Just worried of switching brands if it could have a negative impact?
Changing brands may not have a negative effect but the only way to know is to have a trial. Hopefully it will be successful and most on this forum will have a budget so can only pay a certain sum.
Remember to take your dose with one glass of water, on an empty stomach, but am sure you are aware of this
