Whether or not anybody is prescribed NDT is based upon the RECOMMENDATION of the local CCG, not an instruction. As one doctor has prescribed it for you, it is in contradiction of the principle law of medicine which is to do no harm.

At least that is the theory, but it does not seem to apply to thyroid issues.

A doctor who does harm could be reported to the GMC, or other medical body perhaps, for failure to uphold this "law" and possibly lose his licence.

Hello Rval

If you prefer Armour and your health improved on NDT I would try and stay on it -

What reason was given to go on NDT and what is the reasoning now to stop NDT ?

Can you see the doctor who supported this switch to NDT ?

Did you feel better on the NDT ?

There are very few doctors around who know about NDT - it was the successful treatment for hypothyroidism for over 100 years and only fell out of fashion in the 1960s when Big Pharma took hold of the medical profession and made it into a massive business with patented drugs.

Levothyroxine was introduced around the same time along with the blood tests, guidelines and the new revolutionary way of How to Treat Hypothyroidism with synthetic T4.

NDT is much now expensive than the synthetic T4 but doctors can and do still prescribe NDT for their patients on a " named patient only " prescription which I believe needs to be sanctioned by the local CCG, who hold the purse strings.

You can self medicate with NDT, many of us on here do, as currently it is near impossible to be prescribed anything other than T4 : the price of T3 in the uk is about 600 ( 0 ) ! ? % higher than in mainland Europe, another strange set of circumstances at a very strange time for all of us.

You can look up - open prescribing - and go into analyse and see by CCG or doctor's if any other surgery is prescribing Armour in your area - simply enter Armour is the drug.

As far as I'm aware, The British Thyroid Association has withdrawn all NDT's from being prescribed leaving many patients in the lurch with the worry of how they can keep their good health. They've also taken the same action regrding T3 - leaving many, many patients to worry and the immense difficulty in trying to source their own.

I think whoever made these decisions should resign as they have no incling of what a patient has to go through to try to restore their health/life.

The fact that misinformation was stated regarding the withdrawal of NDT make many patients suspicious of why they became interested in endocrine problems in the first place and have not taken into consideration that many hypo patients may recover on anything but levothyroxine. They do not care and also have made False Statements to get NDTs withdrawn altogether along with T3.

Well seen all of these professionals have actually no clue about how the majority of patients feel when levothyroxine makes them worse than before they were diagnosed.

One of TUK's Advisers (deceased) wrote to the BTA et al with regards to the withdrawals and despite three yearly reminders asking for a response - they never did. Unfortunately for us Dr Lowe died due to an accident.
