Alopecia Areata triggered by pregnancy

Hi All,

I'm currently 6 months pregnant and when I was 2 months, my hairdresser noticed a bald spot on my head. That bald spot turned out to become alopecia areata - in the next few months I've lost almost all of my hair and I'm now starting to loose my eyebrows and eyelashes, assuming it will become alopecia universalis. I also have Hashimoto's, which is under control now, during pregnancy.

Is there anybody else that was diagnosed with alopecia during pregnancy? What happened after the birth, did it get better? Can it get better after giving birth?

Many thanks in advance!

xx

Some people only get one attack and har grows back but sometime it doesn't restore completely but I hope yours is just a one attack.

I have alopecia areata and am not pregnant. I wasn't either when first diagnosed. I understand exactly how you feel but it is another autoimmune condition that attacks the hair follicles and the hair shaft is affected.

Mine is cyclical, i.e. it drops from May until it begins to show new hair around October. I have tried a number of things, but it none have restored hair of improved it. I have reverted to a wig when my hair is too sparse. or there is none at all.

I actually had very thick hair when I was pregnant which a lot women do unless they are lacking in some vitamins. Sometimes stress can trigger this kind of hair loss because my son in-law had the same after a traumatic experience but he saw a dermatologist and it did grow back eventually. Just to add he was given some steroid injections into his hair loss patches but that might not be suitable for you because you are pregnant.
