I chew my levothyroxine medication, how do you take yours?

I’ve done it this way for 30 years. I will probably carry on too 😆❤️

Have you always chewed it? Why? Or, did you used to swallow it whole and find that chewing it improves absorption? Do you swallow it with a large glass of water after chewing it, to make sure it all goes into the stomach?

When I took levo, I swallowed it whole because that's the way it's designed to be taken.

Just always have done it since I was little. I guess I never broke the habit

Is there any particular reason you chew them?

I don’t think so tbh. Just done it my whole life

I have heard of people chewing NDT but not the artificial Levothyroxine. Why are you doing this when you should be swallowing them whole with a glass of water?

Because I’ve been doing it my whole life and it’s just always been that way

Who told you to do that?

I can’t remember that far back. Been doing it since I was I don’t know, a toddler? Although, for something reason in my head I get this “memory” where I was told I could because they changed something to make them “taste” better? I don’t know if it’s a real memory or one my brain fabricated......I can’t work it out.

Also remember they need to be taken 30 mins before your breakfast. Mum’s never chewed hers...?

There seems to be a small-ish group of people who do chew.

Years ago, there were several reports about some levothyroxine tablets appearing to pass straight through. Given the dissolution testing now required, it is seems less likely to apply to UK and US makes than ever.

I see no great issue with chewing so long as it is following by a drink of water. And the usual timing issues are observed.

Do you monitor your results with ranges when you have your check-ups ? ie do you obtain copies for your records ? It could be worth doing and then you will be able to see if chewing brings you optimal results :-) If not it may be worth swallowing them :-)

I can access the blood test results on an app that is linked to my GP and apparently I’m in range.
