Advice please.

Hi hope you can help me out . 7 weeks ago I had pneumonia and sepsis . Was very poorly but am now recovered, chest X-ray clear etc. I had blood tests as I’m still pretty weak. I take 125mcg levothyroxine and 10mcg liothyronine daily. My dr has today told me that my TSH is suppressed 0.02mIU/l ( range 0.30-4.80). And increased my thyroxine to 150mcg At the back of my mind I don’t feel this is right. Wouldn’t it be suppressed if my meds were too high rather than too low? I have other blood results of that helps.

Was TSH all that was tested?

I don't think your doctor knows what they're doing if they've increased Levo because TSH has become suppressed. Levo is increased when TSH goes high.

I don't suppose your doctor knows that taking T3 tends to lower, even suppress, TSH.

It can take months to feel well after pneumonia. You've been through the mill look after yourself.

Thank you SeasideSusie . I knew it didn’t sound right.

I have more results

Free T3 6.5pmol/L 4.2-6.9)

Free T4 14.8pmill/L (7.7-20.6)

B12 242 ug/L (145-914)

Serum folate 2.71 ug/l ( 3.00-20.00)

Serum ferritin 52.0ug/l (11.0-307.0)

Vitamin D 65 nmol/L

Thank you for your help 😊

Considering that you have been so ill so very recently, I wouldn't be surprised if this has had some effect on your results. However, let's assume not.

Did you take your last dose of Levo 24 hours before the test, andlast dose of T3 8-12 hours before the test? If so then your results are pretty much as expected for someone taking combination hormone replacement - low or suppressed TSH, lowish in range FT4 (yours is 55%) and FT3 (yours is 85%) in the upper part of it's range.

However, your folate level is below range and should be discussed with your doctor.

Your B12 is low but as it's in range it will satisfy your doctor. Do you have any signs of B12 deficiency - check here: b12deficiency.info/signs-an...

If you do have any symptoms then list them to discuss with your doctor and ask for testing for B12 deficiency and Pernicious Anaemia. Do not take any B12 supplements or folic acid/folate/B Complex supplements before further testing of B12 as this will mask signs of B12 deficiency and skew results.

Ferritin is low and is recommended to be half way through range. Again it's in range so your doctor will be satisfied. You can help raise your level by eating liver regularly, maximum 200g per week due to it's high Vit A content, also liver pate, black pudding, and including lots of iron rich foods in your diet

apjcn.nhri.org.tw/server/in...

Liver is so good for us, it's classed as one of nature's superfoods as not only is it a source of iron it also has vitamins A, D, E, K, B12 and folic acid.

Vit D is recommended to be 100-150nmol/L by the Vit D Council/Vit D Society. If you don't supplement then it would be worth taking 3,500-4,000iu D3 daily along with D3's important cofactors - magnesium and Vit K2-MK7. Retest in 3 months and when you've reached the recommended level adjust dose to a maintenance dose, maybe 2,000iu, but retet twice a year to check levels.
