Can I say to everyone with a hyperactive thyroid to think about asking for a DEXA scan to check on your bone density as hyperthyroidism is one of the medical conditions that can increase your risk.
Unfortunately I have just been diagnosed with osteoporosis and I so wish someone somewhere had told me of the risk.
Had I known and had a DEXA scan back in 2012 - 2013 when my Graves Disease was active I might have been able to take preventative action. Definitely a case of each department treating ‘their’ part of you in isolation.
Other risk factors for osteoporosis are various medicines (taking steroids for over three months for example) and rheumatoid arthritis.
So, although it is too late for me, check out the risk factors for osteoporosis and if any of them apply to you - ask for a DEXA scan, hopefully others can learn from my lack of knowledge before it’s too late.

Do not despair. I too was diagnosed with osteoporosis and a couple of years later with regular resistance exercises, light jogging, walking, much prayers, supplements and osteoporosis medication I've moved into osteopenia. It is possible to repair some damage so not too late for you. Skip over to the Bone Health Forum for suggestions.
I agree it's a good idea to get your bone health checked and learn all about it, especially when hyperthyroid.
Thank you, I just feel so fed up that I could have been warned by my medics. Now that I’ve joined the ROS and also read a lot about osteoporosis the various factors that affect your bone health are quite widely known - although not by me unfortunately.
Interesting enough I have a friend who is being treated for breast cancer at the same hospital attend and she was warned that her medication could lead to osteoporosis and has had two DEXA scans during her treatment.
Well, it's the same with some people who had thyroid cancer with suppressed TSH and were not monitored for bone health and FT3 not monitored to check it stayed in range. So we are all in the same boat I'm afraid. Yes, I would encourage people to visit Bone health Forum.
I realise we’re all in the same boat but we needn’t necessarily all have been. My friend was told when her treatment finished that her aromatase inhibitor could put her at risk of osteoporosis and she has had two DXA scans. As a result of knowing she has exercised, stomped her feet and generally done things that she would not have done otherwise, while others like me who were unaware of the thyroid/ rheumatoid arthritis/ steroid connections carried on as they normally did. I’m sure that over time osteoporotic patients will cost the NHS a lot more money than a DXA scan or even a couple of DXA scans would and that’s not even considering the pain involved for the poor patient.
Hi my Doctor has implied that self medicating with T3 ( regular blood tests at my surgery) is responsible for me being diagnosed with osteoporosis? Have you heard of T3 doing this ?
