Lab reference ranges

My NHS blood test lists these reference ranges

FT3: 2.5 - 5.7

FT4: 9 - 23

My private blood test lists these

FT3: 3.6 - 10.4

FT4: 7.5 - 21.1

The FT4 range is similar, but for FT3 the highest number is almost doubled in the private blood test. This is quite a big difference. Why?

My FT3 is 6.5 and I’m still feeling terrible. According to the private blood test I’m within range, according to the NHS range I’m still hyper.

Who are we meant to believe?

You cannot compare the tests on the numbers. Each lab has its own ranges and this is due to the method of testing.

To compare results you need to look at percentage through the range or in your FT3 percentage over the range.

Have you thought that you might be feeling terrible because your FT3 is too high. Symptoms of under and overmedicated are very similar..

did you do the 2 tests at the same time (i mean on the same day)?

its abit tricky to understand without you giving the 2 setsof results as well

No it wasn’t on the same day

if the 2 tests weren't done at the same time, then that could explain differing results. or have i missed the point?

Thanks for the insight. Some people say it’s too low, others too high. No clue at this point. All I know is I still get out of breath quickly and still have a tremor despite taking propanolol
