Vit D - changing from pills to spray - advice please

Hey all,

I was wondering if someone could shed some light on. Adding SeasideSusie because you are so knowledgeable regarding vits :)

I now take between 8,000-10,000 units of vit d a day. I know it's a lot, but if I take 4,000 units I'm insufficient...

I would like to give my liver some rest so I'm wondering if I change to BetterYou D3+K2 spray 3,000 units will I keep the same , let's say, 9000 units dose or do I need less because it doesn't go through my whole long body :)

Also, is also topical magnesium spray effective? Same brand

Thank you so much!!!

Rita

As far as I know topical magnesium spray is effective, but of course everyone is different so you can only try. Epsom salts baths/foot soak are also supposed to be good.

I haven't used a Vit D spray, I am unhappy with all the excipients it contains, so I can't comment on whether it would make a difference changing to it.

in reply toSeasideSusie

Thank you, I'll start both sprays and try to see if there is any difference. Hopefully my levels won't dip! May I ask what are you taking re d3 and magnesium?

I should do these foot soaks, I have loads of special salts from springs in Poland, it's like Epsom salt.

Have you seen or heard of anyone using transdermal vit d?

Re excipients in the spray - you mean acacia? I was worried about that one too.

I take Doctor's Best D3 softgels.

Magnesium Citrate and Magnesium Taurate.

I don't know anyone who uses transdermal Vit D nor how effective (or not) it is.

I mean all the excipients in the oral spray, I like to take as few unnecessary additives as possible, which is why I like the Doctor's Best softgels, just D3 and extra virgin olive oil. The magnesium citrate is just that, a powder with no other additives, and the Taurate lists just magnesium taurate and the capsule shell.

Yea agree with Vit D spray ingredients.

I am looking for a good vit D supplement . Did your D3 levels increased on Doctor's best? My levels have consistently been dropping despite of me taking 5000 IU daily.

SeasideSusieRemembering in reply toyesendi

I had severe Vit D deficiency with a level of 15nmol/L. I got it up to 202nmol/L in 2.5 months after loading doses of Doctor's Best softgels. As the recommended level is 100-150nmol I now maintain as close to that level as I can.

Do you also take D3's important cofactors - magnesium and Vit K2-mk7? Magnesium is needed for the body to convert D3 into it's usable form, Vit K2-mk7 is needed to direct the extra uptake of calcium to bones and teeth where it is needed and away from arteries and soft tissue where it can be deposited and cause problems.

The D3 I take it has K2 and K7 supposedly. I don't take magnesium supplements because I consume foods high on magnesium along with Epsom salts baths but my magnesium levels have not been teste thou.

Thanks!

The D3 I take it has K2 and K7

Just to clear that up for you yesendi , it is Vit K2 (not K2 and K7) and it has several forms. MK7 is one form of Vit K2 so you'll see it as either Vit K2-MK7 or occasionally just MK7.

You're absolutely right Susie! My head is all over the place trying to understand this Vit D business but now I know that the wrong kind of Vit D was tested. They tested D2 instead of D3.

Sorry for my delay in getting back to you, I am usually away from the computer on the weekends...need to detox from the interwebs :-)

Seaside Susie

How do you take your K2

😊

SeasideSusie profile image
SeasideSusieRemembering in reply tosmilingjane

With the meal with most fat or when I have a full fat yogurt. I often take it at a different time of day to my D3, but as my D3 is an oil based softgel then as long as there is some dietary fat then I can take them together.

smilingjane in reply toSeasideSusie

Eorry brain malfunction!meant

I meant do you use spray or tabs!

I use Doctors Best oil based softgels, they contain only two ingredients - D3 and extra virgin olive oil.

D3 that is swallowed and absorbed through the gut needs oil to be absorbed so an oil based softgel provides that.

Tablets have poor absorption, obviously a tablet can't contain oil.

Oral spray - some people like them, they are absorbed through the mucous membranes in the mouth so bypass the stomach. However, for me personally I like to keep excipients to a minimum wherever possible and the BetterYou spray contains quite a lot so it's not something I would use when there is such a much more pure alternative.

Hope you don’t mind me dropping by but I take Drs best as well and my Vitamin D has gone up we’re as when I took the tablets it stayed low all the time x

yesendi profile image
yesendi in reply toTimetraveler67

No, not at all, I am glad you chimed in because I need to know whose vit D levels have improved with the brand they're taking. I am strongly leaning towards Doctor'd best as it seems that people have good results with it.

Timetraveler67 profile image
Timetraveler67 in reply toyesendi

Could you please share what your D levels are, so I can compare? I was 48 and now I’m 55 thanks x

yesendi profile image
yesendi in reply toTimetraveler67

Hard to tell what my real D3 levels are as they tested the wrong Vit D but my total is 25. What I really need to get tested for is Vit D3 instead of the D2 the tested.

Timetraveler67 profile image
Timetraveler67 in reply toyesendi

Thanks, I’m still learning about all this, although I’m happy my levels are increasing I want to be optimal if I can. Good luck with increasing your own levels I think your right about the tests, my doctor won’t do anymore bloods on my Vit D she said nhs has stopped doing them so I will have to get checked privately x

yesendi in reply toTimetraveler67

I feel sorry for you guys. My insurance pays for a yearly Vit D3 test if you have osteoporosis or if you tested deficient at on point. But since I already had a Vit D test, the wrong one none the less, I am not sure if the insurance will pick up a second test but at this point I don't care if I have to pay for it myself, all I want is to know what my real D3 levels are.

Sorry I sound upset...because I am :-). This is not the first time they order the wrong test. My last thyroid test done two weeks ago, instead of ordering the FT3 they tested total T3. I call the dr and ask for a re-test for the Free T3.

So can you see why I am unhappy? :-)

Timetraveler67 profile image
Timetraveler67 in reply toyesendi

Yes definitely it’s so frustrating isn’t it and also tiring having to chase them up all the time. I know how you must feel and I’m sorry they messed your tests up x

yesendi in reply toTimetraveler67

Thanks! I appreciate your caring.

in reply toSeasideSusie

I see. I'll stick with my vit d pills, it's also just oil, d3 and the shell. Will try magnesium spray. Thank you :)

I had vitamin D patches very early on but I can’t say I really like them all that much, unfortunately I can’t remember if they were any good or why I stopped using them.

After that I went onto using Better You vitamin D spray which I quite liked but now I take vitamin D gel capsules and I think I prefer them.

yesendi profile image
yesendi in reply toFruitandnutcase

Which brand do you take?

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply toyesendi

Nu U max strength vitamin D - 3000iu - not sure if I’d get max strength next time - I could probably do with slightly less strong and take one every day, right now I take a break every now and again. I like the size though and the fact they are liquid capsules.

Sunflower Oil, capsule shell gelatine (bovine), glycerine, vitamin D (cholecalciferol)

yesendi profile image
yesendi in reply toFruitandnutcase

3000 IU doesn't sound like max strength, I have been taking 5000 IU in liquid drops to no avail. Were you deficient when you starting taking this brand? have your D3 levels have increase? Gosh, I asked so many questions :-)

Hi i use the spray

Please look at tiny print as to how many sprays you need

yesendi profile image
yesendi in reply toCup-cake7

I did look into the spray kind but I didn't like the ingredients in it. Acacia and xylitol.

Xylitol reaaaly upsets my stomach.

Many say sprays aren't as good; The one to take is the soft gels by Doctor's Best 5000 IU's D3; I add my own K2 from MK7 in liquid form (a German co fromAmazon ) or in capsule form....

yesendi profile image
yesendi in reply toValeriu

What brand of K2 do you take?

Valeriu profile image
Valeriu in reply toyesendi

I like : Now and Dr's Best but at present I use the liquid drops from Amazon by a German company : by Vita bay organic :)

There is some evidence that magnesium is absorbed through the skin. Here is an article with citations to that effect.

thetideswellness.com/resear...

Hope this helps.

PS - if you find it itchy, you can use 3 parts magnesium and 1 part aloe vera in the spray. Also it only takes about 30 mins to absorb, so it's ok to rinse if off your skin after that.

yesendi in reply toForeverFree

True!

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply toyesendi

I’ve just bought a Better You Magnesium Spray for sensitive skin. I noticed there was no stinging at all.

I sometimes use Better You Magnesium Body Cream - it doesn’t tingle like the gel can do but the gel is stronger, I like the flakes in a bath.

in reply toFruitandnutcase

I started it a couple of days ago, but be careful if you shave your legs...I did and then touched them after rubbing magnesium oil all over my arms 😂 and my partner gave me a kiss on my arm last night and was not impressed, I think it scared him for good lol

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply to

Ouch! Poor partner, bet that shocked him.

I’m lucky I don’t need to shave anywhere any more. I seemed to lose body hair when I developed Graves’ disease in 2012 and I’ve never really needed to shave underarms or legs since. I’m 71 so it could be an age thing but for me it was the only bonus to having Graves.

yesendi in reply toFruitandnutcase

I will look into it...is it gluten free? I need gluten free stuff.

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply toyesendi

I don’t know, I can’t see any mention as to whether it is or no on the tub. I’m non coeliac gluten free and while I often see shampoo etc marked as GF I’ve not bothered about that myself.

yesendi profile image
yesendi in reply toFruitandnutcase

I if you're not sensitive to gluten and are not celiac then you don't have to worry about creams or shampoos. I, on the other hand have to be very, very careful on what goes into my mouth and on my skin.

Fruitandnutcase profile image
Fruitandnutcase in reply toyesendi

That must be really tough. I went GF to try and dampen down my autoimmune system - it worked - I’ve got several autoimmune conditions but it must be a nightmare to have to watch out for what you put on your skin too.

yesendi profile image
yesendi in reply toFruitandnutcase

Yes it is, but now, when I find something that I can use on my skin I stick with it. It was more difficulty at the beginning when I was looking for creams oils etc.

There is a store called Natural Grocer and they made my life soo much easier because they went above and beyond identifying their merchandise as GF or not..so glad about that.

in reply toyesendi

It's just water and salt, so I'd say it is GF. Partner still here, although, before I get a kiss, I'll be asked questions :)

yesendi

Nice, I'll give it a go then!

Hahaha, well I guess he likes punishment as he's coming for more :-)
