b12 or Vitamin D3 supplements causing anxiety?

Hello all,

I have to supplement both of the above because I am low in range.

Every time I attempt to take them, the following day I have a stomach wracked with anxiety?

Does this happen to anyone else? It’s as though I suddenly feel a bit unpleasantly hyper.?

I’m taking 20,000 iu’s Vitamin D3 once a week and 100mcgs B12 once a day.

Haven’t taken anything for ages so tried it again last night and woke this morning with the same reaction......really bad anxiety.

Am I having a sudden conversion of levothyroxine????

I have read somewhere that taking VitD daily is preferable and more effective than once a week. It's powerful stuff. Are you taking the co-factors - magnesium and K2-MK7 ?

Are you starting to supplement both at the same time?

Just use one, wait 2 weeks and see if you have a reaction. If not then add the second one and see what happens. That may tell you if one or the other is causing the problem.

Is your D3 prescribed? If so it will have a patient information leaflet so you can check on that what side effects are listed.

I will cut the B12 out for 2 weeks.

But I might try taking the Vitamin D3 as 3000 iu’s each day rather than a single dose of 21,000 iu’s once a week .

It might be less stimulating that way? .....

I just seem to be ridiculously sensitive to everything...

Anxiety can be hypothyroid symptom ....don't assume it's hyper

When were thyroid levels last tested?

Improving low vitamin levels will help use your thyroid hormones

The fact your B12 and vitamin D are low suggests your under treated

My last blood results 2 weeks ago were

TSH - <0.01 - 0.27 - 4.2

FT4 - 16.5. 12-22

FT3- 5.9. 3.1-6.8

Bloods were taken 24hrs post T4 and 14 hrs post T3

I’m wondering if the TSH is too low ( overmedicated) but then again I have a diagnosis of central hypothyroidism.

FT4 is only 45% through range

FT3 75% through range

Useful calculator for working out % through range

chorobytarczycy.eu/kalkulator

So this suggests you could have small increase in Levothyroxine ....so that both are roughly 75% through range

Thank you slow dragon.

And thank you for the calculator. Very useful.

I have felt better than this in the past but at that point my FT3 was always higher in the range . Close to the top of the range. Around 6.6

Do you think that some people might just need much higher levels of T3?........

Seems likely, especially if we have zero thyroid function

Stands to reason the blood test is just a snap shot

I would love to do a whole series of tests...

Eg immediately after a long walk

Or after going to the gym or digging the garden etc etc

If you have central hypo, there's no point testing TSH. I would feel well with those thyroid hormone levels but not everyone is the same. I wouldn't have thought that low level of B12 supplementation was enough to make a difference to anything but it could be that you are sensitive to the fillers in one of the supplements

I’m also wondering now if my pituitary ACTH levels are dropping? I’m in bed so much because of chronic tiredness and pain.

My production of TSH is virtually non existent. .

Could be. My symptoms are fatigue, nausea, headache and stomach/back ache when I'm not making enough cortisol. Plus dizziness on exertion, so I have to lie down immediately and can't get up for quite a while. I used to actually throw up, too, but I've been much better for the last few years.

Hi Joesmum, this is my first comment on this really excellent forum which I joined a couple of weeks ago hoping to find a way of helping out my hypothyroid father-in-law.

This suggestion is speculative, but I'm wondering if your reaction might be related to magnesium deficiency? Apparently D3 and magnesium work synergistically: they need each other. D3 will use up magnesium rapidly, so if your magnesium levels aren't adequate to start with, then adding D3 might cause problems. One of the side effects of low magnesium can be anxiety. I don't know if any of the more knowledgeable members on here would have any thoughts about how likely that would be?

Hello LyraB,

Welcome to the forum and thanks for getting in touch.

I think getting a magnesium supplement would be a very good idea. I’ve been reading up on things this evening and magnesium does seem vital to D3 synergistically.

Good call. 😊

Hi joesmum. Im on thyroxine for underactive thyroid, I took vitmain d3 3 months ago after a blood test showed i was really low. I was taking 25000iu a week. After my course finished i felt amazing. But last 2 weeks my typical symptoms tiredness, struggling to get out of bed, short memory loss, aches and pains started again. So i took 800iu twice a week to help me feel better. But everytime i took it i felt crazy tirdness on the second day when driving back from work. But the other day i ended up having an anxiety attack with the tirdness. My first one since over 2 years ago. Now for last few days i feel like a strange out of body experience plus come very anxious on and off through out of the day. Really upsetting, i try not to think about the out of body experience, effects me more if i think about it. Not sure if its the certain vitamin d3 company that isnt suiting me.
